I was born in October 1957 in Monterey, California, and until I was twelve, my family and I traveled back and forth between the United States and Europe as my father served in the armed forces. Upon his retirement in 1968, we established our home in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents first met after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I had to adapt to our new French lifestyle. We attended French schools as teenagers and remained there until we graduated high school. Shortly after, my parents divorced, and my father returned to Arkansas, where he grew up. We stayed in France for a few more years until my mother remarried and relocated to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. At 19, I came to Florida, ready to start a new phase of my life.
For two years, I worked in different construction roles until a neighbor brought me on to assist with roofing. In 1983, I passed the state licensing exam for roofing contractors and became the qualifier.
