I came into the world in October 1957 in Monterey, California, and my family and I lived between the United States and Europe until I turned twelve as my father was in the armed services. Upon his retirement in 1968, we established our home in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents first met after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I adjusted to life in France. We attended French schools as teenagers and remained there until we graduated high school. Not long after, my parents divorced, and my father moved back to Arkansas, where he was raised. We lived in France for a few more years until my mother married again and moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I arrived in Florida at 19, eager to begin a new chapter in my life.

I held various construction jobs for two years until a neighbor hired me to help with roofing. In 1983, I passed the state exam to become a roofing contractor and became the qualifier.
