I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and I spent my early years traveling between the United States and Europe until I was twelve as my father was in the armed services. Upon his retirement in 1968, we established our home in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents first met after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I adjusted to life in France. We went to French schools as young teens and continued until we graduated from high school. Shortly after, my parents divorced, and my father returned to Arkansas, where he grew up. We stayed in France for a few more years until my mother remarried and relocated to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I arrived in Florida at 19, eager to begin a new chapter in my life.

For two years, I worked in different construction roles until a neighbor brought me on to assist with roofing. In 1983, I passed the state exam to become a roofing contractor and became the qualifier.
