I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and until I was twelve, my family and I traveled back and forth between the United States and Europe as my father was in the armed services. Upon his retirement in 1968, we established our home in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents originally met post-World War II in the early 1950s. My brother, two sisters, and I learned to embrace our new life in France. We went to French schools as young teens and continued until we graduated from high school. Soon after, my parents separated, and my father went back to Arkansas, his hometown. We stayed in France for a few more years until my mother remarried and relocated to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I reached Florida at the age of 19, excited to embark on a new journey.

I took on several construction jobs for two years until a neighbor employed me to work on roofs. In 1983, I passed the state exam to become a roofing contractor and became the qualifier.
