I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and I spent my early years traveling between the United States and Europe until I was twelve as my dad was in the military. When he retired in 1968, we settled in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents originally met post-World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I adjusted to life in France. We attended French schools as teenagers and remained there until we graduated high school. Shortly after, my parents divorced, and my father returned to Arkansas, where he grew up. We lived in France for a few more years until my mother married again and moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I arrived in Florida at 19, eager to begin a new chapter in my life.

For two years, I worked in different construction roles until a neighbor brought me on to assist with roofing. In 1983, I passed the state licensing exam for roofing contractors and became the qualifier.
