I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and until I was twelve, my family and I traveled back and forth between the United States and Europe as my father served in the armed forces. After his retirement in 1968, we moved to St. Nazaire, France, where my parents first met after World War II in the early 1950s. My brother, two sisters, and I learned to embrace our new life in France. We went to French schools as young teens and continued until we graduated from high school. Soon after, my parents separated, and my father went back to Arkansas, his hometown. We lived in France for a few more years until my mother married again and moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. At 19, I came to Florida, ready to start a new phase of my life.

For two years, I worked in different construction roles until a neighbor brought me on to assist with roofing. In 1983, I passed the state licensing exam for roofing contractors and became the qualifier.
