I came into the world in October 1957 in Monterey, California, and until I was twelve, my family and I traveled back and forth between the United States and Europe as my father served in the armed forces. After his retirement in 1968, we moved to St. Nazaire, France, where my parents first met after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I had to adapt to our new French lifestyle. We were enrolled in French schools as teenagers and stayed until we completed high school. Shortly after, my parents divorced, and my father returned to Arkansas, where he grew up. We lived in France for a few more years until my mother married again and moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I arrived in Florida at 19, eager to begin a new chapter in my life.

For two years, I worked in different construction roles until a neighbor brought me on to assist with roofing. In 1983, I successfully completed the state exam to become a licensed roofing contractor and took on the role of qualifier.
