I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and I spent my early years traveling between the United States and Europe until I was twelve as my father was in the armed services. Upon his retirement in 1968, we established our home in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents connected after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I had to adapt to our new French lifestyle. We went to French schools as young teens and continued until we graduated from high school. Not long after, my parents divorced, and my father moved back to Arkansas, where he was raised. We stayed in France for a few more years until my mother remarried and relocated to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. At 19, I came to Florida, ready to start a new phase of my life.

I took on several construction jobs for two years until a neighbor employed me to work on roofs. In 1983, I successfully completed the state exam to become a licensed roofing contractor and took on the role of qualifier.
