I was born in Monterey, California, in October 1957, and my family and I lived between the United States and Europe until I turned twelve as my father was in the armed services. When he retired in 1968, we settled in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents originally met post-World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I adjusted to life in France. We were enrolled in French schools as teenagers and stayed until we completed high school. Soon after, my parents separated, and my father went back to Arkansas, his hometown. We remained in France for a few additional years until my mother remarried and moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the autumn of 1977. I arrived in Florida at 19, eager to begin a new chapter in my life.

I held various construction jobs for two years until a neighbor hired me to help with roofing. In 1983, I successfully completed the state exam to become a licensed roofing contractor and took on the role of qualifier.
