I was born in October 1957 in Monterey, California, and my family and I lived between the United States and Europe until I turned twelve as my dad was in the military. When he retired in 1968, we settled in St. Nazaire, France, where my parents connected after World War II in the early 1950s. My siblings and I adjusted to life in France. We attended French schools as teenagers and remained there until we graduated high school. Soon after, my parents separated, and my father went back to Arkansas, his hometown. We stayed in France for a few more years until my mother remarried and relocated to Palm Harbor, Florida, in the fall of 1977. I reached Florida at the age of 19, excited to embark on a new journey.

I took on several construction jobs for two years until a neighbor employed me to work on roofs. In 1983, I successfully completed the state exam to become a licensed roofing contractor and took on the role of qualifier.
