My father and a group of investors initiated this venture with the goal of becoming significant contributors to the Los Angeles real estate market. They built various small housing projects, but ultimately, all investors divested their stakes to my father. The project kicked off in the late 1950s. With the original investors leaving and my growth, Wide Awake became a family-operated construction firm. In 1969, we focused on roofing as our specialty.
Since 1988, I, Edward Spann, have been the sole proprietor. I am passionate about this business because of the fantastic people I regularly meet. Wide Awake Developers - since 1969.

D J.We inherited a pesky leak on our flat roof that required mold remediation and a full resurface. Ed's team handles everything post-remediation, from framing and drywall, to building a cricket to redirect the water flow on the roof, and then a full coating of high grade coating that has resealed the whole roof. The work was done quickly, cleanly, and as advertised. Thanks Ed!
Ed was referred to me by a trusted general contractor. He replaced the roof on my house and I had a great experience. He was easy to work with, knowledgeable, patient with my many questions, and nice to communicate with during the many schedule delays due to rain. I would definitely use him again.
This roofer says that he provides a guarantee to fix the roof leak, ""guarantee"" is perspective. He came out as an emergency call, I paid $450 to repair a water leak during the rain. He slapped some roof cement on areas of the roof and left ..aware that rainwater was currently pouring into my attic despite the temp ""fix"" which he admitted would not necessarily fix the issue, and it didn't. He provided no further advice to mitigate the emergency from further damage until the rain stopped. He provided a very very costly estimate on top of the $450 I had already paid to fix the root issue. I ended up finding YouTube videos that helped me stop further damage to my attic and ceiling during the immediate emergency until I got a roofer with integrity out to repair.
I called five roofing contractors about putting a new roof on my Tudor style home. Two did not work on steep roofs. One wanted me to pay $70 for an estimate. The fourth gave me an estimate $5,000 more than the estimate Ed gave me. Ed and his site manager, George, were informative, professional and pleasant to work with on a project that intimidated me at first. This was not an inexpensive project but I received good value in terms of workmanship and materials for the money I spent. The roof was completed in a timely manner and looks great.
Called a few contractors to repair/replace Spanish tile roof. I got a great vibe from Ed, who gave us a fair price, a complete breakdown of the process, and his professional recommendations for our roof so we could make an informed decision. We opted to replace our Spanish tiles with a newer S-style tile. Although the job took a few days longer than estimated, the crew worked hard to get it done to our satisfaction. We told them we would rather it take longer and get it done right. And it turned out fab-u-lous! Wide Awake may not be the cheapest, but they are competitively priced. We are very pleased with our roofing experience with Wide Awake Roofing!
Miguel O.Came recommended by other contractor. Unfortunately, never got to even work together.
Scheduled to meet at the job site two days after our call. We agreed he'd call before heading out there, as we both are about 45minutes away from the job site. Calls me from the job site, and with only limited time, because next job was waiting already.
We finally walk the job site, he takes measurements. We start talking about timing. ""Yeah, bad news. Fully booked for next three months."" So, why do we even meet in the first place?!?!? Complete waste of time.
After some convincing, he (George) agrees to the one part of the job (we had leaking spots on various roofs on same property) same week Friday, and another one the following Monday. Great. Progress. Agreed to put together some numbers, so we can pull the trigger and get the job done. Nothing. It's been crickets since then. This to me is complete lack of reliability. The way somebody does anything is probably indication of the way they do everything.
Not sure why they would get recommended by anybody.
My family and I are so happy we selected Wide Awake Roofing to replace the roof on our home. Mr. Spann is a true gentleman and professional. He takes pride in his work. Our roof is beautiful. We were satisfied with the fair price, the work was completed in a week and the cleanup was amazing. Definitely an A+ company!
Stuart S.I procured estimates for a complete roof replacement on my home, including replacing all gutters and downspouts, from 10 different roofers. I initially went with the lowest bidder and regretted it. Without going into details, I had to fire that company and hired Wide Awake Roofing.
Ed is very knowledgeable about his craft, and is well versed on the ""cool roof"" ordinance in Los Angeles City. We settled on a price, he showed me samples, and scheduled a date. Then El Nino rain happened, and we had to push the date back until. As soon as it was sunny, he and his crew did the job in a week.
The job would've taken less time, but we discovered structural damage, and it needed to be fixed. He quoted me a reasonable price, and fixed it.
My biggest concern was clean up, but I have only found a few nails in the garden, which is amazing considering the hundreds of nails that were removed from the existing roof.
All the neighbors love the new roof and comment on the downspouts. I am really happy.
Call Ed!
Wide Awake Roofing is the absolute best! I wanted to get my roof replaced before the El Nino storms and was very happy with the price and the outcome. Ed Spann, the owner, is honest and very prideful of the work his company does. The crew was wonderful...cleaned up every speck of dirt that was left after the job was done. Everyone was very cooperative and helpful. In this era of dishonest contractors, it is good to find some one who is not just a salesman but a man of his word. I highly recommend Wide Awake Roofing...tell all of your friends who need a roof repair or replacement to call Ed... before (or after) the rains appear!
Ajay S.Wide Awake Roofing is true to its name--it's open, straightforward and honest about everything it does. We asked for an appraisal regarding a major leak in our roof in the summer of 2015, and the company's owner, Ed Spann, was here the next morning. He gave us an estimate that I ran past a contractor friend who said it was reasonable and not overpriced. But it was months before we got back to Mr. Spann to get the job done. Even though prices had gone up, he stuck to his original estimate and fixed our roof. His crew was unusually gentlemanly (roofers tend to be more on the rough side) and did a perfect job without causing the slightest bit of ""collateral"" damage. I highly recommend Wide Awake Roofing to anyone who wants a good, honest job done.
