I called Lawson back in July and John came out to do an estimate on my roof. I just got the estimate last week (over 2 months) after having called them at least 4 times to remind him to send it to me. And each time I called he went on and on about how busy he was and didn't remember all the estimates that he had on his plate. The estimate came in almost 3 times the cost of other roofers! I have a tar and gravel roof, so there aren't many people who do them, but I was still able to find three companies to get competitive bids from. When I called John back to ask him why it was so high he said that it was because Lawson puts a plastic layer on the ceiling inside the house to keep debris from falling inside and they replaced all the galvanized fittings on the roof. When I told him that didn't make sense as accounting for such a huge price difference, he suggested that the other roofing companies were probably using day laborers and not experienced roofers. How rude! He also said that Lawson is a union shop and they pay benefits and vacation pay, again suggesting that the other companies were not well run companies. So, after 2 months and almost triple the cost, needless to say I won't be using Lawson and I suggest you don't even waste your time calling them for an estimate. Clearly they have enough business right now.

Made appointment -sent extensive pictures -assured appointment verified-
No showed - called - the man who we talked to via phone and email had no record of the appointment -
Made appointment for next day - he showed up at the wrong time -
shows up at the right time - suggests a NEW ROOF for a leak around a drain - I asked for him to send quote - never heard back

so ridiculous -- such a waste of time -
I don't care how long they have been in business - they are HORRIBLE and UNPROFESSIONAL

Seems us Homeowners in SF are tolerant of this poo level professionalism from Contractors-

The Lawton Employees name is Gonzalez (last name) in case they care to respond or attempt to defend this nonsense.

HEADS UP - don't tolerate this nonsense home owners !!

I am an Architect with over 25 years in the business and most of our work is commercial so I cannot really address the residential side of the review but what I can say is that Lawson is very highly regarded in the field and anytime there is an issue that is too complicated for the average roofing company, almost all the General Contractors I knew in SF universally recommend Lawson. Over the years I have worked with Lawson on fluid-applied roofs (with synthetic turf), single-ply roofs, asphalt shingles and below grade foundation waterproofing, and in all applications, I found them to be very competent and professional and would recommend them to any of my clients. They may not be the least expensive but from my perspective these are acceptable costs for ensuring the work is done properly.

Terrible customer service. I had to call for 6 days before I could get someone on the phone who could help. I even called to let them know that I sent an email checking availability, and they said that it will take 4-5 days to get back to me. Say what? I wish I had read the reviews before I reached out to them. Moving on to the next!

I hired Lawson Roofing to remove and replace the roofing on my house, despite the bad yelp reviews. I asked for a roofing contractor recommendation from a general contractor that I've worked with and whom I trust, Lawson was recommended.

I called for an estimate, and John Gonzalez, Residential Manager, called me back within 24 hours, made an appointment to look at the roof, and showed up on time. I received a professionally presented estimate in the mail in less than a week. I was already aware of the extent of the work that needed to be done, Lawson's estimate was reasonable, coming in at less than I expected.

The job began on the day agreed upon and was completed within the estimated time frame. Everything went like clockwork, with supplies and equipment arriving promptly when needed. The crew was very polite and worked very efficiently, and the work site was cleaned up daily. I was impressed, to say the least.

The company also accommodated a personal situation, for which I am sincerely thankful.

I will never climb up on my roof to inspect the work that was done, so I'm anxiously awaiting the next Google Earth photos. The real test will be the winter rains. I will post another review if there are any problems, otherwise it can be assumed that all is well.

We had Lawson replace our roof a few years ago, and were extremely pleased with the work done. During this last rain, we had some leaking, and I phoned them. John Gonzalez came to our home the very same day of my call, found the problem area (not the roof, but another section below.) He did a quick fix, and I am awaiting a bid to have them repair the area that is leaking. I am so glad that we chose Lawson, and will use them when we need any roofing work done. Thank you John, you are a great guy, and Lawson is a great company.

Lawson Roofing is the best! They showed up on time, did a terrific job (tearing off the old tar and gravel roof, putting on a new one, reinstalling old skylights and completely cleaning up a very messy job. ) They weren't the cheapest but their work was first rate. It also meant something that they have been around forever. Neighbors who used Lawson raved about the jobs they did...who raves about roofers? They deserve the praise. (It's true: you get what you pay for.)

Wow, I was surprised to see low ratings for Lawson. I can't tell you how good they were for me. About six different neighbors in my Townhouse complex had their roofs replaced, Lawson was the only one who recommended ""maintenance"" rather than total replacement. Where my neighbors all paid about $6,000 for roof replacements, I only paid $1,800 for maintenance. It was also obvious from looking at my neighbors roofs that the seals were not done well. Lawson did a great job for me. The caulking was very thick. Rather than replacing my roof, they could make it last for 20 to 25 years. All my neighbers over paid and will have to continue to replace roofs every 8 years.

It took four weeks for Lawson (who had previously done work for me that I was pleased with) to get a bid for the work, and then only after I called and asked what had happened to the bid.

I can't tell you how the work would have been, but they came in TWICE as high as three other roofing contractors. This was a big expensive job. And the only answer was ""well they dont have the same scope of work""--they did.

Please don't ruin your month by hiring these people. John Gonzalez came out and said they'd stop my roof from leaking. After having it repaired it still leaked. I called, John came back, looked up and said, ""You have to caulk around there."" It was horrible service.
