We had Sureguard renovate our newly purchased home in April 2021. It was a long project as expected when fully renovating an older home. We ran into termite damage that was missed during our inspection but Sureguard was able to remedy it quickly and efficiently. We were happy that Sureguard also warned us before the start of the project to keep a contingency budget available for such unexpected costs. We had Sureguard remove and replace siding, paint, concrete, turf installation, install a new fence, and lay pavers on the exterior. On the interior they added recessed lighting, 2 sliders, fully renovated our kitchen and bathroom, laid tile floors, replaced two windows, and replaced all the old plaster walls with new Sheetrock. Marcos and joe worked primarily on our job site and they were very respectful. Home renovations can be very stressful but Sureguard made the process as painless as possible even with unexpected changes. We have some additional work we still want but honestly needed a break from construction for a bit and time to recoup funds.
Shannon O.My husband and I hired Nick with Sureguard for an interior and exterior project. Per Nick, Total project would be complete in 90 days, it ended up taking 10 months. After 6 months of an extremely stressful process, one evening we had to ask multiple times for Nick to leave our property. Nick was yelling at us and threatening to bull doze our house down if we didn't give him an advanced payment. After that we contacted the owner who tried to save the job by sending a crew down from Oregon and find other local employees and subs to save the project as much as he could. Here's some cliff notes of what it was like.
The first 6 months, the site was covered in demo, supplies, tools everywhere, nails (we have a two year daughter). Nick promised to do a lot of the work himself, (""I will do all the tiling, I will be on the job site every day, I will do all the detail work, I will do all the painting) and did about 1/10 of what he said he would. Several brand new items were damaged by Sureguard and needed to be replaced or worked on: wood floors, front door, shower faucet, windows, window frames, bathroom vanity. Plumbing of the sink wasn't done right and flooded new wood floors.
Nick raised his voice and yelled at us at least 6 times throughout this process. Most of these were when we had questions about a change order or the plan of the project. We felt trapped, bullied and verbally abused on multiple occasions. He threatened to walk from the job when it was gutted and we were living in a rental and felt like we had no options. We witnessed him yelling and cussing at his employees on 4 occasions.
Nick issued 2 change orders without written or verbal agreement after the work was done. We were asked to make 3 advancements on payments, he called them ""progress payments"" that were not in our contract. The last one he asked was the final payment. When we asked to meet with him about our concerns of paying him 80% ""progress payment"" of final payment before the work was done Nick withheld work. He said he couldn't make payroll that week without the payment.
We found drug paraphernalia on our property and found an employee drinking while working. Later Nick stated this employee got addicted to meth and was no longer working for him. The employee hired to replace him stapled ram board into our brand new wood floors. Nick stated he ""couldn't manage him"" and he stayed on the job site for 2 months until he wasn't given work.
4/5 of the employees who worked on our home left Sureguard during the process. Each one offered to do work as freelancer, outside of Sureguard, one said ""so you don't have to deal with Nick."" 3 of them complained freely about his management. One called us saying ""Nick owes me payment and won't return my calls"" One stopped by our home one day to ask if we knew why he got fired.
The owner was able to gather resources and almost finish the job. He sent Vlad from Oregon who redid a lot of the exterior siding, fascia, doors, windows, and trim that was done poorly. Marcos who was newly hired at the end of the project was always respectful and did quality work, finishing and fixing interior parts of the project. We hired external help to redo a lot of the work and finish the job as well including 3 guys from another company who worked for a full week, stucco guys, painters, and carpenters, electricians and we still have things incomplete.
My husband and I both had panic attacks on multiple occasions from the stress of this experience and working with Nick. We write this in hopes that this doesn't happen to anyone else. If you'd like anymore details feel free to reach out.
