R.S. Toyama Roofing Service
Company Overview
My father's enterprise focuses on roofing. While this may seem like an unverified statement, he is undoubtedly one of the most seasoned experts in roofing. He entered the roofing trade with my grandpa as his mentor during the year 1969, and established his own company in 1979. I have a strong belief his business methods have not evolved since 1979, since I don't believe he maintains a working website, has little knowledge of Yelp, and is likely to use the Yellow Pages exclusively for exposure.
As his daughter, I lack extensive knowledge about roofing, but I figured managing his Yelp page could benefit him. It surely can't be worse than having a complete 1-star rating. I wish to point out that my father's business practices are, to put it kindly, somewhat antiquated, his 36 years of service to this community speaks volumes.
For any questions, feel free to reach out to his office at 808-847-6265.
Should you find the time, I encourage you to read some articles about RS Toyama that outline the company's beginnings in 1979, and highlight its continued support for the Oahu community:

We needed to get work done on my mom's roof. Toyama Roofing came highly recommended by a family friend. Mr. Toyama came out and met with my mom. She felt he was trustworthy and he assured my mom that he had years of experience and could take care of re-Roofing the area above her patio and garage. When his workers came do the job in September, 2019, they broke the glass panel on one of the solar units on the roof - which they didn't replace. They also did a shoddy job around the solar unit and didn't resurface the area around the solar panel. If it weren't for us going up on the roof to look, we wouldn't have been informed of the damage or the missed area. When we told Mr. Toyama about it, he assured us that he'd send his workers back to resurface the area around the broken water panel - After We Remove The Broken Solar Panel Ourselves!! He told us he wouldn't charge us a fee for sending the workers back to resurface around the existing solar panels - how nice of them to actually complete the job they were hired for! Additionally, we found that the garage was still leaking. Mr. Toyama told us he'd fix the leaking garage - at no cost - a few days later. They never showed on the day they said they'd come back. It took several more days of waiting for them to come back to resurface around the solar units and fix the garage area that was still leaking.
Fast forward 17 months and several rainy days later when my mom noticed water damage inside the house on the ceiling right where the patio meets the house. When we went up on the roof, we saw 5 large holes in the roof near the edge of the patio. Mr. Toyama claimed the holes were in an area that they weren't responsible for - even though they had supposedly resurfaced that area when my mom hired them initially. Mr Toyama denied responsibility for the holes in the roof (and all the water damage inside the house and also the resulting Black mold inside the ceiling), but offered to caulk the holes in the roof with roof cement for us at no cost. My mom needed to hire a company to cut open the ceiling to remove the damaged ceiling panels inside the house, remove the Black mold, replace the ceiling panels and paint the ceiling. We told Mr. Toyama that we'd send that bill to him. Had it not been for the shoddy work his workers did at the edge of the patio area, we wouldn't have the damage to our ceiling.
Mr. Toyama's caulking of the holes lasted just about 9 months. With the catastrophic rain from the recent Kona low on Dec. 7, 2021, my mom had leaking inside the house again- right where Mr. Toyama previously filled the large holes. Again, Mr. Toyama denied responsibility for the damage. This time, however, he sent his workers to completely cover over the area of the roof at the edge of the patio. Basically, they resurfaced the part of the patio roof that should've been done back in September 2019. We can only hope that this time the problems have been fixed. (Fingers crossed). Now we're stuck having to pay for and fix the ceiling area again (because Mr. Toyama denied any responsibility for the leaking again). I'm now worried if my mom has Black mold growing in her ceiling again because of the leak in the roof. My mom is 75 years old and we shouldn't need to worry about respiratory issues because she hired Toyama Roofing!
We can also echo the frustration others have had with Mr. Toyama's office staff. His secretary/receptionist is not only unpleasant (if you actually get her to answer the phone), but she has refused to give us any information on the time that the crew will arrive (even a range of a few hours). Additionally, when asking for copies of our contract agreement, she sent us a copy of another customer's check payment!! It's truly frightening how incompetent, inconsiderate and extremely rude she is!
All in all, we don't recommend this company at all. If I could give zero stars, I would! Buyer beware!

R. Toyama came out check for leaks at my Hale that I am renting. Toyama came the next day after a night of thunder showers to determine where leaks are.
I been in this business for over 30years not once I heard so much complaints on the person who works in the office. One person can hurt the reputation of a long time company. Give Aloha get Aloha!
Wayne T.Mr. Toyama and his crew did a great job. The installation for re-roofing for the carport was only 4 hours. The price was very reasonable.
Mr. Toyama provided prompt and excellent installation of a new roof on our new home construction. I would recommend his company to anyone.
Lynne M.Three weeks ago we called Toyama Roofing Service regarding a roof leak. We were told that the owner would be out the next day to take a look. Great! A half hour after the set appointment time we called to see what was happening. We were told that the owner had driven by and, given his age, would be unable to check out the roof. Too steep and high! He'd send his helper over in a couple of days to check it out. Not to worry. They could take a look using our ladder so we didn't even have to be home. Hearing nothing, we called them again a couple of days later. Sure. They'd been by, took pictures etc. We'd have a quote soon. Waited. No quote. Made three additional calls. Were always told the quote would be ""in the mail."" Now, three weeks into this odyssey we're waiting and, now that the rains have returned, I sit here listening to dripping through the ceiling. Thanks, Toyama! (not) The irritating thing is this company came highly highly recommended by a friend. I will now have to go back to that friend and tell him to please not recommend Toyama to anyone else. Wish I could tell you something about the quality of their work but, given this treatment, I wouldn't even let them on my property at this point. Hey, if you don't want to do the job at least have the human decency to tell someone that you don't want to do it rather than lead someone on.
My ceiling showed signs of a bad leak, Monday morning. I emailed R.S. Toyama and they replied within an hour. Raymond Toyama came out the next day and inspected my roof. He determined that my roof was in good condition and but needed minor resealing done. Today, his men came out and were done within 30 minutes. ""No job too small. No job to big. Go where the job is and as soon as possible"". I highly recommend R.S. Toyama Roofing Service Inc. I emailed another company ""nearby"". To this date, I haven't heard from them. ?
I want to send a very heartfelt thank you so very much to Raymond, owner of this company! He was referred by another roofing company to address my parent's leaking roof from the recent Hurricane Lane as he was reported to be very knowledgable with my parent's roofing material. I called yesterday and Lucy took the message down and scheduled an appt for this morning. I was so grateful! Mr. Toyama came out and went on the roof and fixed the leak on this older style aluminum shingle roof. It is one that others have stated is a challenge to fix. Mr. Toyama was so humble and respectful towards my elder father and explained the problem that he fixed right away. My father is 'old school' but quickly liked Mr. Toyama and what he did. I am just so relieved that the roof was fixed in less than 24 hours and my stress level can decrease now in keeping my parents home safe! Mr. Toyama represents a business that has integrity, respect for the customer and doing what is right. It is unfortunate of a few past years review that do not reflect what service I had received today. I will refer others to him! Thank you!
Whatever other people are writing about this company I can tell you that as a senior and one who has built many homes on this island and on the outer islands, it is hard to get ""old school"" kind of work that is excellent and work with people who listen to what you want and do the job right the first time!
The crew is also trust worthy and not people that they just pull off the street to get the work done. Roofing is a very interesting business within the contractor arena and there are A LOT of companies who claim they have experience like painters do and then screw up.
Mr. Toyama, Brittany and Robert are all good communicators and very responsive to all your questions. And to top it off, they are kind and always answer the phone.
I would give these guys 10 starts if I could.

Wendy S.My parents just got their roof done by this company and they did a great job!!! Did a background check before we called and found out that they have been around for a long time. My parents are not the most savy with the English language, but the person who picked up the phone was patient and kind. We're not sure why others say there weren't an estimate since we got ours really quick. The estimate was received and the completion of the job was done in a timely manner. They had no problems from this company or the workmanship so far. Would highly recommend them to all others!
Little surprised by the two other 1-star reviews. I had no trouble getting this company to come out and give me an estimate, followed by a quote via e-mail, my approval to proceed via e-mail. They didn't require me to pay until the job was done although the contract said something like 50% on the first day, the job took two days to complete and they cleaned up the stripped roof nicely too. Other companies I contacted never showed up, didn't provide quote or did so weeks later, didn't seem all that interested and provided higher prices. I'd work with them again.
