My roofing journey began in 1978 when I was hired by Dan Long Construction to install shake roofs as a high school student. I continued working with Danny until I enlisted in the US Army Airborne.
In 1982, after my Army service, I came back to Hawaii and roofed various shake projects in Waipio Gentry. In 1984, I returned to California and received my Roofing Contractor's license.
After coming back to Hawaii in 1995, I supervised for several leading roofing companies on Oahu before acquiring my Hawaii Roofing License. In all my 37 years in roofing, we have not had a single complaint.
My roofing career kicked off in 1978 in Newport Beach, California. Following my service with the US 82nd Airborne Infantry, I came back to Hawaii in 1983 and was employed at Gentry Homes, focusing on shake roofs and various island projects.
I returned to California in 1985 and started Oceanview Roofing Co. in Newport Beach. After thriving in California, I was drawn back to the islands and returned to Kailua in 1995. I have lived here for nearly 19 years and raised my family.
This year, I celebrate 37 years in the roofing business. I don’t intend to retire from roofing, as I love what I do! The owner of Oceanview Roofing.

Roxanne R.worst ever, gave high bid, then did shoddy job.. lied right to my face.. bad business... stay away
Donald C.Ocean View Roofing is one of the top roofing companies on Oahu.
Pete does a great job, and has so many years of experience which translates to my confidence in his abilities.
Any time as a designer, if I have a question regarding roofing techniques, or materials, I give Pete a call.
One star is one too many. I hired them to install a metal roof and they wound up putting 100's of screws through my open beam ceiling. Shiny screw tips poking through with 1/2 dozen planks splitting where they penetrated.
Among other issues, they failed to cover the pool and then failed to clean up and remove the nails that fell in during tear off. Pool grout, pump housing and filterbasket all have nail shaped rust marks. The pool heater took two service calls to make it run right again due to debris.
Their carpenters? More like laborers with power tools. Amateurs. They couldn't measure or cut properly, resulting in gouges where they miscut the rafters and damaged the surrounding material. Fascia board they mounted has a curve from that overcutting. A 4x6 beam they installed split from underpiloting and is supported at the bottom in mid air by a 1/2 inch screw.
Just recently i discovered that my master bathroom exhaust no longer vents to the outside. The spot where it used to go through Is buried under a roof panel. This explains why the fan was running so loud and working so poorly.
But back to the installation. One breezy day 1/2 a dozen 25 foot long panels went flying off my roof, across the street and into my neighbors yard. The workers were not harnessed to any safety gear at any time that i noticed. They were extremely lucky not to be on the wrong side when the panels blew off and flew over 50 feet.
Day in court coming up.
If you're looking for and HONEST company, please consider Ocean View Roofing!!! I had a problem with my skylight leaking and just did a full remodel on our home about 5 years ago, roof included, and was wondering why it was leaking. Dan Mickelsen came out and told me the roofing job was solid, but after further investigation it wasn't the roofing, BUT the skylight which had a defect. Dan was able to patch it up with some caulking and NO leaks. However, please beware as I've had two other roofing companies come out and told me they needed to do a major replacement - the work would've cost me $2,500+... PLEASE consider this company from minor to major repairs !!! 5+ STARS RATING!!!!
STAY AWAY! THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND RUN!
I am goIng to have to sue this rip-off company not only for the return of my money (work not done,) but for the complete destruction of the interior and structure of my house because they failed to do it right. They are not even being serviced by suppliers any more because of their dishonest practices.
Update:
In my original review of Oceanview Roofing I took issue with their apparent practice of giving discounts in exchange for writing positive Yelp review and with the quality of their primary product, namely Interlock Roofing.
Since then not all has gone smoothly.I've received a threatening letter from a lawyer representing the owner of Oceanview Roofing as well as a 7:00 PM visit from a stranger who wanted to know if I had a problem with Interlock roofing. He was told to leave my property, which he promptly did.
Despite this I have amend my review in light of recent developments. Apparently Oceanview Roofing is no longer affiliated with Interlock Roofing. The owner of Oceanview has informed me that he discovered irregularities in his relations with Interlock as well as the salesman who came to my house. Evidently the salesman was working with Interlock, not Oceanview.
I've therefor upped my rating to a neutral 3 stars from my original 1 star. It still bothers me that all those five star reviews were posted. However that stopped immediately after my review. And I'm not happy with getting threatening letters from lawyers, but then I understand Oceanview wanting to protect their business. (Nothing came from that letter BTW. I just ignored it.)
So I'll leave it up to you to others to review Oceanview. After all, I never contracted with them, never saw them work. My negative review was based solely on their marketing practices and the product that they were pushing. The marketing has changed and they no long deal with Interlock.
Aloha
Little introduction about our house before I start,
Prior to install a PV system on our house
We needed to replace 25 yr concrete roofing which almost worn out.
Refereed by RevoluSun, our PV system contractor.
Within few days of inquiry, the company representative came our house to give presentation.
Indeed outstanding presentations.
At the end of October, We signed contract for $40,000 aluminum interlock slate roofing with some discount (agreed to presenting our house as advertisement purposes).
The company took 50% of bill as down payment in order to get this 'advertisement presentation discount'.
2 months passed,
Our PV contractor was ready to install the PV system (done with HECO approval and whatnot). As soon as we finish with this roofing Project.
Unlike RevoluSun giving us updates on their status frequently,
I didn't get any contact from Oceanview Roofing ever since the contract signing date.
So I had to call them to get the status update.
It was mid Dec. I contacted them, saying the shipments and materials went to wrong location and will get new a status update in 22nd of Dec.
But, Just like before these guys wont say a thing for 2 months, I didn't get any contact on Dec. 22. So I had to call them again.
This time, these guys are saying they are waiting for container to open which contains materials. and I'll get a status update on Dec. 27.
Guess what happened again today? No contact at all
I have no idea where's this 'shipment' is coming from also have no idea why is it taking so long to get in.
'Are these guys trying to rip me off ?'
That's all I can think of.

Update as of Jan 23. 2015.
Construction began on Jan 21. 2015, finished in 3 days
Top quality work. took a while to get the shipments(took 3 months)
Company could've give me frequent update on status.
I cannot attest to how well they do with the roofing because they would not give a quote unless we paid them $300. They said they would take the money off the fee to do the roof if we chose them to do the job. For me, this is not acceptable. Oceanview attempted to claim that the $300+ tax was to do an inspection. The roof had already been inspected by a licensed contractor so we knew we needed a new one. In the end, we got three quotes for our new roof -- none of the other roofers charged us to do a quote.
Kira K.Pete, Dan, and all their workers did a wonderful job on our roof! Even in first deciding upon our investment, Brian came to our house and took time to explain our options and the pros/cons. As new homeowners, it was a relief to have someone really go over the ins-and-outs of the process.
We bought our house knowing we would have to re-roof in the near future. Our old roof was 30+ years old and crumbling apart with the rain and the winds. Our old roof ""problem"" was a big factor in deciding whether or not we would finalize the purchase of our home. Whether buying, selling, or for everyday living, your roof is your home's best investment. We are so happy with our new roof, which will probably outlast our home!
We chose the interlock aluminum slate finish roof, which was done in 3 days! This sleek roof adds to our home's curb appeal. The crew that worked on our home was professional, efficient, and proficient in the work that they did. No mess was ever left on our property-they cleaned and closed up everything, each time they left.
It's such a relief to have our roof completed! We no longer have to worry about the wind or rain damage that our home is susceptible to. We can now rest assured that our home is protected from the elements in the many years to come!
Richard H.Recently, the high winds and rain blew a lot of our shake shingles off from the roof into the yard. It was time to get a new roof! I received proposals from several roofing companies on the island and felt the most comfortable with OceanView Roofing. Here's why:
1) Sales team - Brian is very professional and will sit down with you to show you a variety of products and how the estimate costs were put together.
2) Owner's guarantee - Pete has a passion for roofing and ensures that each customer is happy with their services - from sales to contract to the final walk-thru. We worked through the pricing so that it fit within my budget and I didn't compromise on any of the product quality or scope of work.
3) Availability - This was a big selling point...we signed the contract on Friday and his team was there on Monday morning, ready to work! The other roofers were backed up for 3-5 weeks with other jobs and the rain wasn't stopping anytime soon.
4) Roofing team - Dan manages the crew. They show up early and leave late, clean up each day, and even worked on Saturday to finish up. There were at least 6 guys each day and the job was completed in 7 days. The new roof is so beautiful!
5) Warranty - they offer a standard 7 year warranty for any repair work needed.
They are BBB rated and a great company to work with!
