In 1946, Jimmy Cosenza Sr. founded Seal-Tite Roofing Company. In 1952, he moved the business to San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, into the very building that houses Nicholas Roofing today.
At the age of 17, Jimmy Cosenza Jr. took on part-time work at his father's Seal-Tite Roofing Company. He graduated high school and then joined the United States Army for three years. Upon returning, he resumed roofing while attending San Francisco State University. In 1976, he married Susan Love, who graduated from UC Berkeley. As they started a family, Jimmy transitioned to a full-time roofing career.
In 1981, Jimmy launched Nicholas Roofing alongside his father's Seal-Tite Roofing Company at the same Berkeley site. He named the company Nicholas in honor of his three-year-old son. Eventually, Seal-Tite Roofing closed, and with the passing of Jimmy Sr., Nicholas Roofing became the sole roofing company on San Pablo Avenue.

Nicholas Roofing gets big kudos from me. Jim and Nick are both great to work with. Honest, personable and super helpful. The recent big storms left me with rivers of water pouring into my garage attic. Nick came to look at it and found the drain plugged with pine needles. He cleaned it out for me - free of charge. We've had heavy rain since then, and my attic has been bone dry. Nick bought me some much appreciated time on my roof by cleaning out the gutters.
Thank you Nick! Nick and his dad Jim have a plan on how to fix the bad roof design on my house that is causing the problem.
A couple of years ago Jim came to fix a chimney leak (a totally different area of roof). Prior to our our buying the house someone had done a poor Job of a patch. Nicholas roofing came to fix it.
I think it was a bit challenging to fix because of all the layers of old gunk, so took a couple of attempts, but they came through with a leak free roof. Still leak free two years later! The cost was very reasonable.
These guys are my roofers! I highly recommend them.
An honest roofer who goes the extra mile.
Michael A.Great service!
I have a three-story house, requiring an extra large ladder. All I wanted was for someone to take a look at the roof to let us know if it needed any work. Nobody else wanted to fool with it.
These guys did it for free! Will call them again when I have work done next time.
Vicki R.Rock stars. easy to deal with. do exactly what they say they're going to do.
After an unsucessful attempt to get Acker & Gurerro to show up or return phone calls (see review) i called Nicholas. They were great on the phone, followed up the appointment with email reminders, and were prompt and thorough. We grabbed a hose and sprayed it on the roof to determine the exact location of the leak, pretty much exactly where i thought it was. They said no problem to patch that, you don't need to re-roof, it's in good condition. One of their guys came in two days and patched it for $100.
$100
Acker & Guerrero thought nothing of hard selling me into replacing my entire roof at, like 70 or 80 times that. wow. Nice to know some people still have ethics.
My house was re-roofed by Nicholas last year, just before the big storms. I found Jimmy to be very pleasant when he came to provide the estimate. Nicholas also got some good feedback on bpn and from my GC too. Very pleased that I got the old leaky roof replaced and that their work has held up so far.
I wish I could leave a stellar review for them. However, bad office communications and gaps in scheduling prevent me from doing so. There was one part of the job which was particularly troublesome for the workers to address. It was hard to get in touch with somebody there to figure out what could be done about it, and when. After they had taken the gutters off, it was left untouched and open for weeks- leaving me in a slight panic as the rainy season began.
There was also a question about the bill which went unanswered, and they would not continue the job until it was paid. Normally I don't like to pay for unexpected charges without an explanation first, but in this case I had to or else risk the job being left unfinished. That sums up my experience with Nicholas. I don't doubt they do good work and stand by it, but client dealings could be better IMO...
I had some leaking in my roof and based upon the YELP reviews I had them come out to fix it. They said it was because the flashing on my roof ventilators weren't done right and so I paid them to fix it. But the roof kept leaking. They refused to come out to look at it. At my insistence after several calls, they sent out one of their crew people that could barely speak English. He said that the unit was put in wrong completely and the initial repair that they did wouldn't have fixed the issue. When I asked about getting a credit for the work done and redoing it so it wouldn't leak, the owner wouldn't even call me back. Some service!
Ode B.My experience of Nicholas roofing is that they missed 2 different appointments to inspect our roof. The first time we let it go and chalked it up to a busy contractor. The second time--after taking time off of work to wait for them to arrive--I called only to be informed that they had no idea who we were or that we had an appointment, (not to mention the first missed appointment). Unprofessional? Very. Incompetent? At least when it comes to operating a calender and pencil. They did come recommended to us, but we certainly won't be passing their name along to anyone we know or like.
Nicholas Roofing put a roof on our house about six years ago, and we were very happy with the work and the price. Earlier this year, we had a leak during a heavy storm. I called Jimmy Cosenza, and he agreed to come by at 7:30 am to accommodate my work schedule. Jimmy pulled out his ladder and located the problem quickly. I also asked him to inspect our gutters, which were not operating properly in one area.
Jimmy had a crew come by within a few days, and they fixed the roof and the gutter AT NO CHARGE!! In addition to the great service, Jimmy is extremely pleasant and personable.
Obviously, I give Nicholas Roofing my highest recommendation.
Nicholas Roofing recently put a new roof on my detached garage. Jimmy (the owner) showed up exactly on time to get the info for an estimate. In addition, he also inspected my house roof, which is newer than the garage, and pointed out some minor maintenance that I could perform.
I also got a bid from another reputable company. The prices were close but Nicholas was a bit less expensive. More important, they proposed to replace the existing tar and gravel with modified bitumen; the other roofer proposed a new tar and gravel roof, a proven but messy approach.
The crew arrived on schedule to perform the tear-off, which took a couple of hours in the afternoon, and cleaned up the worksite before leaving. The two key guys returned the next day and installed the new roof. They were obviously immigrants but their English was very good and they were fluent in roofing terminology. They were very courteous, competent and did a good clean-up when they were done.
Here is the best part. Many contractors want some payment before starting a job, others are standing at the door demanding final payment the instant the job is done. Nicholas sent me a bill a week after completing the job. I found this practice, along with their punctuality, to be refreshingly professional. They certainly have the inside track on doing my house roof when the time comes.
Karin M.OK, I haven't actually had any work done by them yet, but I give them 5 stars for customer service. I've had the owner, Jim Cosenza, out a couple of times to get an estimate -- he's given me great advice on steps I can do myself to alleviate the problem. He's a really nice and pleasant guy, and the office staff always answers my calls right away, calls me back promptly, and are all really pleasant to deal with. I'll definitely use Nicholas Roofing when it comes time to do my repairs.
