Response to Mortensen Roofing - Again ... BE VERY WARY ABOUT USING THIS COMPANY: When the City Bldg. Department was contacted, to speak with the inspector about the passing of what we consider material defects in this roofing job, imagine the SHOCK when we were informed that a roofing permit was not even filed with the City. So in addition to all of the other warnings about using this company, BE AWARE that they charge you licensed-contractor rates/prices, but do not afford you the protections (as required by law) of a roof inspection upon completion. Not only did we not get a roof inspection, which would have been flagged as issues by the City and they would have then been fixed back when the job was completed, but there is also nothing on record to prove that we have an upgraded roof (for insurance purposes, for resale, etc. - if needed).
In direct response to John's comments: Discussing the past-issues re gutter maintenance and wood-rot as the customer's fault totally avoids ownership by this company of the current roofing material defects and the fact that an experienced company should have bid the job better. Afterall, the customer clearly knew there were major issues, as there was a complete walk-around done with the company owner before the bid was presented. Many major problem areas were pointed out and discussed in detail at that time, so they could be thoughtfully considered in the roofing proposal (or so we thought they would be)...some places the sky could be seen through the overhang - a LOT of wood rot was already recognized by this customer. An experienced roofing company would take the time to properly bid the job at the outset. We were handed an increase of 26% over the original bit, once the roof was removed, when we were at our most vulnerable state to negotiate (during the middle of the winter weather) -- we are not talking a small under-bidding here, for an experienced roofing company!
And the other major issue this company is not taking ownership of (regardless how long ago the roof was done - after all, this is 30-year roofing job) is the quality of workmanship (or lack of). Perhaps there was a misunderstanding re worker's promotion; but that does not negate poor workmanship. It actually makes it a worse issue that (1) someone was promoted to work unsupervised, who performs poorly and (2) this worker is well aware they can leave material defects and it will be accepted or never reviewed by the owner or a building inspector, because no inspection will take place, and they obviously are very comfortable finishing a job w/material defects, w/out inspection/care/follow-up or repercussions by the owner. (By the way, I was also assured by the owner that even though they would not be the person actually working on the roof, they would fully inspect the job upon completed before they signed off on it for payment. Well... either (1) they did not inspect it or (2) they didn't care.)
Addressing the 4.5 year delay in warning others of this company: One of the critical areas that was pointed out during the walk-around and discussed in great detail with the owner was in a doorway overhang area that was completely rotted out, because the prior roofer did not address the shingle overhang correctly. I was very emphatic about the need to correct this problem at the time of walk-around, so it didn't rot out again and leave a lake to walk through in the doorway area. I was assured that this would be fixed and would not be an issue with the new roof. THIS HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. I didn't have opportunity to check it out for the 1st few years (due to a multi-year drought and no need to use that doorway during the scant rains we had). It wasn't until this past winter, when we finally had some big down-pourings that I noticed a lake of water outside that doorway area. So I climbed up in the middle of the rain storm, thinking the gutters were clogged (after I had just had them cleaned out). It was then I realized the gutters were not clogged and the water pouring down was not overflow from the gutters; but was in fact the exact same problem I had before -- NOTHING had been changed/fixed. The water is still not making it down to the gutter; rather, is running down between the facia boards BEHIND the gutters -- just as it did before. I was so SHOCKED to see this, infuriated that after specific discussion and the added fees to get this roof on that one of the big issues was still not fixed. We had already looked past the other material defects for 4 years - told ourselves to just put that in the past; but this one item changed all that. We're again insulted by this company who treated us so carelessly as customers. 4.5 years regardless, it is still a problem and will be until another roofing company fixes it. We were not respected as customers and were taken advantage of -- it is important to share these isssues with others, to warn others about using this company.

John Mortensen was recommended by a neighbor and now I can't recommend him enough. Our adventure started when our insurance carrier sent a present, requesting that we reroof our home or lose our homeowners policy. As if that wasn't enough, they required the process to be completed in a quick 60-days.
John and Humberto were great to work with. From start to finish, they were communicative, able to work within our tight timeline, and come in on budget. They also did an amazing job as our roof survived the bomb cyclone of 2021 with ease.
As an add on to the project, we wanted to open up a portion of the overhanging eve to let light into one of our rooms, Humberto spent the time to understand what we wanted and did an amazing job livening up our home office. A great, local team that I would not hesitate calling in the future.

From the estimate forward, I found working with the owner, John Mortensen, to be easy and professional. His bid was clearly the best I received. His crew, especially the supervisor, Humberto were skilled, professional, friendly, and helpful. Humberto's entire attitude was ""we will make it right"". The crew thoroughly cleaned the premises at the end of each day. The roof looks great, and the repair work they had to do (replacing a 35 year old roof) was done quickly and, again, professionally. I'm not prone to writing glowing reviews, but I was, quite frankly, thoroughly impressed. Roof replacement is a huge undertaking and intimidating for the owner. I'm quite comfortable recommending John for your roof project. I know this reads too good to be true, but, I assure you, it is true. It hasn't rained, yet, so I can't attest to leak prevention, but I'm confident if there is a problem ""we will make it right"" will be the response

John and his team are great. I have used them to fix leaks in our roof as well as install a new roof and gutters on an addition. I will continue to use his services and refer him to family and friends.

The recent, heavy rains exposed a leak in our roof above the living room. John Mortensen scheduled our repair quickly. He showed up promptly, and quickly identified the likely culprit: a set of lag bolts holding down our chimney cap that were not sealed at all.
Since it was too wet up there for the sealant to adhere and he correctly recognized me as someone who is pretty handy, he recommended the type of sealant to use, (he said an exterior silicone sealant or Sika Flex were both good options), and gave me instructions on how to walk on the roof without cracking its lightweight concrete tiles so I could make the repair myself.
Since he didn't charge me for his visit, I want to thank him here for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and insight.

I used Mortensen roofing last year for a small roof repair on my
garage. John was on time and professional and completed the
job within his quote. I am very happy with the excellent work and
recommended him to my neighbor who saw the work being done.
Highly recommend.

John Mortensen came highly recommended by a realtor friend of mine who I called and desperately needed a recommendation to have my roof looked at.
I am so thankful that John was the one I called. He is an honest professional , so caring and sincere and the best.
The flat roof on my family room had a constant problem of ""pooling water"" and just needed a different design that would allow the rain water to drain out into the gutters.
John explained what he was going to do, showed me pictures of before and after.
He is so considerate, something rare in the business
So if your roof or gutters are leaking, Call ""John Mortensen""

John Mortensen is the best!!! He is so kind, and he goes out of his way to make sure that people are taken care of. Today he had his employees come over and install gutters on our home that needed them desperately. He was so considerate, thoughtful and they did an excellent job. Just in time for the first rain of the summer! The timing was perfect! John has over 30+ years of experience in his business, and he is reliable, dependable, reasonable and he's very tall so he can reach any roof. I highly recommend him!

John is an honest professional with a lot of experience. I was told I needed repairs on my roof during an inspection, I called Mortensen and John showed up the next day, at a time of my choosing. He checked my roof and found no damage whatsoever. In fact he showed me my roof is still in great shape. If you need someone with real knowledge and experience, call Mortensen.

Mortenson Roofing is a great company! Last year we had a repair done. The quote was reasonable and our leak problem disappeared. This year we called them again and John, the owner was honest enough to tell us it was merely a clogged gutter. Not everyone would be so honest. When you can't go to the top of your roof yourself, call Mortenson Roofers. You don't have to worry about their honesty or integrity.
