After calling me several times the day before, made an appointment with me and then no show, on the day of the appointment. When I called the company , the lady who answered had an attitude and mentioned that it was the other office that was going to send out the tech. She was not together at all that early in the morning and asked me to repeat my name and address twice and when I told her that I had just given her my name and address, she was absolutely rude and hung up. No wonder they don't have 5 star reviews and they are not even fit for the 4 stars they have.
FIVE STARS for Alan Huston and the crews who completely re-shingled our OAKLAND CA home recently. VERY SATISFIED. Talking with Alan and Noah in person on their first visit facilitated asking questions, reviewing their literature, confirming their current license and bonding online, choosing our shingles. We are retired on fixed incomes -- Alan worked out a cost reduction by calling his supervisor and combining some of our job costs with a larger roofing project of theirs nearby._____Alan is knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and reliable. Different crewmen worked on the different work crews; each crew working efficiently and well, finishing each day with a clean-up of our brick patio, deck, stairs, and other affected areas surrounding the house.
Time span from proposal date to project completion on a Friday spanned ten days, including the first visit/contract signing + 3 total work days with an interval of no work (including a Sunday and the 4th of July). GREAT JOB!
However, only 3 Stars for the parent company ""Modern Roofing"" aka ""Modern Home Improvement"": Main Office in Burbank CA, crews working through different offices in Southern and Northern California -- because of confusion caused by differing contract numbers on the paperwork. Our contract consisted of 2 pages, both headed ""Modern Roofing"" with the same Burbank CA office address but according to the online CA Contractors License site, #944950 is ""Modern Home Improvement""; #807881 is ""Modern Roofing"": different business names. Seeing that both are listed under the same ""qualifying individual"" Mario T. reduced anxiety... If there is a Bay Area branch office, it would be helpful to have that information.
1 STAR for Yelp. ""Modern Roofing"" on Yelp in the Bay Area is an entirely different company with a different owner, Ivan. Yelp reviewers of Modern Roofing do not specify the city where they live, so I find their comments useless for comparison with the persons who oversaw and built our new roof.
Nick V. Came to our home and was able to start our roofing project as soon as possible. They got it done quick and efficiently and was extremely helpful and worked with our insurance Delays. However, they guaranteed to clean up after every job but after the first demo, there were nails all over our driveway, in our garden, on the street. Our neighbor got two of them in their tires and had to pay to get them repaired. We are still finding the roofing nails today even though they finished. The company themselves were still very professional and helpful. I would still recommend them. The roofing was done well and looks great.
Chris Louie L.May 31st (Wed) when I requested for a free estimate. Two of their guys (Nick and Jack) showed up and presented a well prepared portfolio of the company, what they do, and the materials they use. Fair enough, they did good in pitching their sales.
I was told that since they have another project nearby, they can passdown the savings with logistics and cut the cost (a common sales tactic of roofing companies mentioned on Yelp reviews). We walked in front of the house and pointed out obvious damages. I asked questions regarding these concerns and they promptly and assured me that they will take care of it. I was convinced. And since I was eager about the project that's been long overdue, I set aside my doubt so, I gave them my trust. That was my first mistake.
Thursday, a day after signing the contract, teardown started. Even when I was told they will ""supervise"", they never did show up to check. Just few of their workers tearing down the roof.
Friday, after the roof was completely torn down, Nick and their supervisor arrived to inspect the roof with me. Well, I saw it not really as to check on the teardown quality, and what needs to be replaced within the contract, but another sales pitch opportunity. I declined and told them to stick to what is in the contract -- replace 15% damaged wood. This is when I pointed out again the concerns I had on the first day. I was denied - and I was told that it's not a part of the contract even if I was assured during the first day that they will take care of it. I confronted Nick who I talked to, but he denied saying what he said on the first day. I told him how can he deny it when these are obvious damages seen even without tearing the roof down.. This is when it dawned on me that I made the wrong decision of selecting this company. I never saw him since.
June 5th, Monday, it drizzled. Water started dripping into our insulation. Good thing I woke up early that morning when I normally wake up late. Almost two hours after calling them, that's only when my roof was covered. I requested to let the roof and insulation dry for few days, but installation still happened the next day.
The sales reps aka project managers (Nick and Jack) that's supposed to be here overseeing/checking the quality of the work, not even once showed up during the teardown and installation. I never had the opportunity to check, so now, I am just hoping for the best that I won't have issues with the roof when it rains. If I don't call or text, I won't know what's going on.
Sunday, I had the chance to check the lower part of the roof. It looks good on the outside (I'll give them the kuddos for that), but underneath, the wood installed tells a different story. The wood they used to replace the decking is not the good type. It's like they bought wood not carefully inspecting each one. The good side is placed on the outside, what the eye can see.
I am deeply frustrated how this project went. If I could only turn back time, I would NEVER have agreed. Their sales team is good in convincing people, but unreliable after homeowners sign the contract.
LESSONS LEARNED:
- DO NOT completely trust what they say. If you questions or concerns that needs attention, have it in writing. Have everything in black and white.
- DO NOT award the contract immediately. They will let you hear what you want to hear. Give others the opportunity to present their business.
Being a military vet and an aerospace inspector by trade, I should have known better. It's just sad that when you start trusting people, some kick you back down.
Today, July 5th, a month after signing the completion paper, no one from their company reached out even after I stated I was frustrated with how the project went.
hired them to fix a roof leak. they came. said they fixed it. I paid them. It rained again the next day and it leaked. Now will not return my phone call.
Modern Roofing re-roofed our house back in 2007. With the recent heavy rains in 2023, we had a little water damage on our family room ceiling. Turns out it wasn't due to their work, but probably to a more recently installed roof vent done by bathroom remodelers. Even so, Mike came out--the same Mike who'd supervised the original re-roofing in 2007 (a bit more gray but still pretty chipper)--climbed up and checked the roof and made some small patches. No charge. By the way, he also said the roof still looks good and should give us another 20 years. Highly recommended.
Hovik T.This company is great i highly recommend! My project manager Nick went above and beyond for me! Very precessional customer service and most importantly they know what they're doing.
I needed a job done fairly quickly especially with thr rain that we had just gotten here in California. I called modern roofing the came the very next day for an estimate. Alex was very professional and knowledgeable with every step of what needed to get. After we spoke that first initial day. They came the next day and finished the job. From start to finish I recommend modern roofing. Ask for Alex he will take care of you 100%
I was referred to Modern Roofing by a close friend of mine. As someone that doesn't know too much about roofing, I was pleasantly surprised by the professional of its team. Alex in particular made the entire process super easy and explained everything really well. It was so stress free! If you need roofing, Alex is the guy to see! 10/10!
Gary K.Had an older roof and gutters that needed replacing and started shopping around. I came across Modern Roofing on Yelp and glad I ended up going with them. Alex came out right away and was very knowledgeable. He walked me through the process, showed me samples, and provided an estimate very quickly.
The work they did was fast and incredibly good.
I would highly recommend Modern Roofing and Alex.
Thank you Alex and Modern Roofing team.
