The Hanley family, Ian and Chris, runs Limey Roofing.
Located in Redwood City, California, Limey Roofing has been serving the community since 1988.
Ian Hanley came to the US from England during the early 1980s.
Ian recognized the urgency of finding work to support his family.
He began roofing for various companies before establishing Limey Roofing in 1988.
As we near our 29th anniversary, Limey Roofing remains committed to our clients.
Following college, Chris Hanley joined the family business full-time in 2012 after learning the roofing trade during summers with Ian.
Ian takes pride in his English heritage, which inspired the name ""Limey,"" a term for a British person in the US.
He typically arrives at work early, enjoying a cup of English tea.
We focus on delivering quality rather than quantity.
Unlike larger, impersonal roofing companies, Ian and Chris handle all the work themselves without subcontracting.

David S.Ultimately the work product turned out to be solid. Ian and his lone hard worker, Shane, are competent roofers. They put in solar tubes, they removed old insulation, put in new insulation, put in a ""floor"" in several places in the attic for storage, put on new gutters, and worked with me to allow me to install recessed lighting while the roof was off (we replaced the plywood too). He provided a reasonable estimate, and stuck to it. So I can recommend them based on the overall product.
But...
Ian is perhaps the most difficult person I've ever tried to work with. Some days, he was reasonable, but many days, he was extremely curt, abrupt, and downright rude. Although I asked him about the report of possible rain in midsummer, he laughed at my naiveté and said he knows the weather better than the weather forecasters. Guess what, it rained while we had no roof. At 4am, during a downpour, I called Ian and he scrambled over and covered the roof. Not too much damage, but awfully frustrating...
On the last day, he emptied a bunch of scraps of gutter in our recycling bin. When I asked about it, he gruffly told me it was no problem and shut the lid and walked away, so our recycling bin had less room for our actual recycled stuff. I handed him the last check feeling very glad I would not have to communicate with him again (unless the roof leaks... 10 year warrantee is included...)
Ian would stomp around on the roof (and I mean, STOMP) and swear and cuss and grunt all morning long. With 3 children at home doing distance learning, with windows open, they learned new swear words. The best sound of the day was Ian starting his car at around 11am to leave. He would leave the rest of the work to Ian, who quietly did great work, especially his attention to detail.
If you are able to hire him and only speak to him on the first day and the last day, you might be ok. If you are the type of person who might ask questions, check the status up on the roof, or inspect their work, be ready for Oscar the Grouch.
Susan K.We had a great experience with Limey Roofing. Great communication & reasonable rates. At one point, we hadn't had rain in months, my weather app didn't mention rain, but Ian came by to batten everything down on a weekend because he thought rain was a possibility. Sure enough, we had a 20-minute downpour Sunday in the wee hours. He knows his stuff!
Hats off to Ian and Chris for an excellent job re-roofing my detached garage and minor repairs (dry rot, etc.). Excellent workmanship, timely, courteous, and fair price.
Dave L.Excellent work in a timely manner. Well
Done job. Would highly recommend. I had roof repaired and gutters done. All done extremely professionally at a reasonable price.
If I could, I'd give Limey Roofing 10 STARS! Ian and his son Chris have repaired and placed new roofs of several of our families homes and we could not be more happy with their work!
Iain put a new roof on my mothers home, and did a beautiful job!
Limey Roofing has also repaired roofs on a couple of my brothers homes, and most recently came out in the rain to take a look at a problem area we had on our roof . Besides coming out in the rain, Iain took the time to design the part we needed and installed it - just amazing.
We couldn't be happier with the quality of service we receive, their prices are fair, and they stand behind their work. We will continue to recommend Limey Roofing to ALL our friends!!
Mary M.We called Ian after a contractor left us with a roof that leaked in 3 places. He diagnosed 3 very different problems, repaired each of them appropriately, and now after this rainy winter we can say that he did the right thing - no more leaks! The price seemed reasonable and the job was completed in a timely manner. Bonus is that we greatly enjoyed Ian's sense of humor.
J L.Ian reroofed my house on Hudson Street and did a fantastic job. No more problems through the raining season and it looks great. They got the job done in a short amount of time and at a very fair price compared to others. My property was left clean and I was happy with the result. They have also helped with gutter work and roof repair on another property as well. I would definitely use them again.
We hired Ian and his team to do some roofing / gutter work. Right from the start he shared he was a bit busy but felt he could take on our job. Long-story short the experience was horrible. Very evident because the other jobs was taking most of his time and because he was stressed on addressing our work he was terrible to work with. Rude, swearing but more importantly when he finally came over to do the job left a total mess. Cement filler all over the house, yard / outside of our house left with garbage not to mention I had to pick up all of the old nails so that our cars would not get any flats.
Laura S.I was looking for someone to help my Aunt put on a new roof, recently. I called a ton of different places for estimates over the weekend, a few weeks ago. Ian also came highly recommended to me, by one of the guys I called (whom, as it turns out, just does gutters).
Ian was VERY professional. He showed up quickly, went up on the roof, took measurements, and told me he would, later on, drop off a full estimate for how much the entire job would cost.
As promised, he delivered a full, professional, printed estimate of the entire job, which I was able to share with my landlady. He ALSO dropped off a sample of some roofing materials that could be used to do the job. My aunt and I were both impressed.
If there is anyone out there looking for a decent roofer to do their job, I would recommend you give Ian a call. He is professional, fast, easy to work with, and does what he says he will.
Eric K.Ian and his son Chris recently replaced the roof on our 1800 sft home in Redwood City. I went with Limey Roofing because I liked Ian's no non-sense, tell you how it is style, and he was the only roofer that estimated and recommended a proper fix for a flat section of our roof. Our home had a flat roof addition put on in '70's, had been ""patched"" up poorly over the years and not draining properly. Ian recommended we add a slight pitch on the flat section so water naturally drains off (a little more expensive to do this but the optimal solution), where as the other roofers we had in for estimates either didn't mention it, or advised to build up a section in the middle of the roof with fiber board (which I didn't think was a permanent fix). Overall expect quality work and a 10 year guarantee from a small family run business right here in Redwood City.
