Honestly, I was quite disappointed. Jong Kim was recommended by a friend, who went to high school with Jong's son. Due to the tangential relationship and referral, Jong was nice enough to give us a discount. Grand total for the new roof was then about $9,300 for the re-roofing.

Mid-installation of the new roof, he discovered that a large portion of our roof did not have sufficient planks to support the new roof and other miscellaneous dry rot issues. Understandably, those things were not apparent until they finished removing the old roof, so we agreed to pay an additional $1,000. Grand total was then about $10,300.

Grand total to replace and install 4 skylights was an additional $2,950, about $1,000 of which was for labor and installation. The $1,000 for labor and installation was not a good deal because the installation was not done well. It hasn't rained since installation, so I can't tell if they are water tight yet, but the wood along the bottom of the skylights are not visually unappealing. Indeed, one section had a cracked piece of wood. I am forced to hire a contractor to finish it up with some paneling or molding.

If the only things that happened were the above, I'd probably give 3 out of 5 stars, since you get what you pay for. Here's what makes them a 2-star worthy place:

    PROBLEM 1: DAMAGED/BENT TRIM/FLASHING

The trim/flashing around the edge of my roof was originally installed in a strange manner that wrapped around the flashing. Because Jong and his crew were not familiar with this wraparound trim/flashing, they managed to mangle and bend it when installing the new metal flashing. Jong informed me that they could not fix it because it was a construction not roofing job. He offered to refer someone that I would have to pay to fix it, but as you may imagine, I do not value his referrals. Plus, I didn't think I should have to pay for something that he damaged. I don't have the funds now, so the ugliness remains until I can afford to have someone come to repair and/or replace the damage.

    PROBLEM 2: DELAYED CLEAN-UP

The re-roofing job was almost done on Wednesday, but it wasn't until the following Monday (5 days later) that he came to finish some dry rot and to clean up all the roofing scraps and nails. Neither my family, my dogs, nor I enjoyed the delayed clean up of the mess.

PROBLEM 3: DIFFICULTY IN GETTING INFO/DOCS FOR TAX DEDUCTION

Before we agreed to retain Jong, I asked him very specific questions about the materials and skylights he would use to ensure that we would qualify for the applicable energy efficiency tax credits for new roofs and skylights. In other words, he had advance notice that I was planning to claim tax deductions.

After the installation, I asked him for certain documentation and information. He kept providing the wrong information and documents. Specifically, he provided warranty information instead of the energy efficient certification and labor/materials cost breakdown. Sure, some of this may be the difficulty in communicating in a language for which he was not too familiar, but I purposely tried to make my emails requesting the information to be as clear as possible.

After a frustrating week of exchanging emails, I was finally able to get the information and documents needed to document and take the applicable tax deductions.

During that week, however, I was offended, and frankly, pissed off that he implicitly accused me of being unreasonable, and asking him for things that he has never been asked to provide in 30 years. I feel bad that of his many clients in the past 30 years, all were ignorant of the tax credits available in 2011-2013 for new roofs and skylights. Regardless, I was also infuriated when he seemed to insinuate that there is no such tax deduction. Well, there is such a tax deduction: http://energy.gov/savings/residential-energy-efficiency-tax-credit But, after all the time, stress, and energy of getting the information and docs from Jong, I question whether the deduction is worth it.

Jong and Jim were wonderful to work with. Their crew was also timely, considerate and professional. They communicated with us at every step and stayed on budget, despite a few unexpected turns. As home-improvment projects go, this was about as stress-free as it gets. After removing 3 old layers, they did a beautiful job applying the new roof. To boot, they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

I bought a house that had this roofing company do one of the sides of the roof. The job was done prior to the purchase and the roof membrane was not installed far enough up the slope of the shingles which resulted in water penetration which resulted in leaking in my house and damage to my walls. I called them during Christmas to come take a look at the roof because the leak was bad and it was forecasted to rain for another 3 days but no one picked up. In an emergency I had to call another company up to patch my roof instead. I called JB back to inform them and they told me their legal worksmanship guarantee time frame has expired and thus won't do anything about the job. While I understand this guarantee policy, the fact that they did a poor job with my roof in the first place gives me the impression that they are doing poor jobs so that after 5 years the job needs to be redone, which results in more business. When the other roofer took a look at the roof during the leak, there were definitely holes left open which could only be a result of poor worksmanship (i.e. not nature / wear-and-tear). Why you might ask? Because hte membrane was short by at least 6 inches.

Would not recommend. Find someone that will do a good job the first time and you would never need to call them again.

Jong Kim came to inspect our roof. He was an honest guy and very respectful. He came highly recommended. I can see why. He could have easily scammed us and told us there was something wrong with our roof since we had a leaky windows. But, he didn't. He was honest, and recommended a good painter instead. :) Pretty awesome.
