Hoyt Roofs did everything the promised on time and on budget. Like a pro football team, Chuck Woldhuis is their experienced ""no nonsense"" coach. He first bid and explained our job accurately and thoroughly. He then guided us through selecting new tiles. We went with Eagle who has a great showroom where you can see everything they manufacture. It's located in Irvine. Chuck's team features several ""star"" journeyman roofers who really know what they're doing. They bring in ""extras"" as needed for both initial demo and final clean up. I highly recommend this truly professional Hoyt team.
If I could turn the clock back, I would not have used Hoyt. They quote you one price on the phone, and then the price skyrockets when they get to your place. Then you're stuck with either paying their $295 service charge for no service or paying them the hiked up price to have them do what you described on the phone.
Hoyt Roofs estimate was in the middle of the pack. Chuck is knowledgeable, professional and a fair (tough) guy for negotiation. It took them less than 5 hours for a crew of 12 to tear off the existing asphalt shingles roof (dusty and noisiest step of the process). Dago the roofer is courteous and professional. His son Martee also a roofer is on the quiet side (he ignored to answer my questions/compliments many times) and the technique is not as good as the Dad. His nailing pattern is not uniform compare to his Dad nailing pattern, the distance between the first and second nail is almost twice the distance between the 3rd/4th and the 4th/5th (shortest distance) nail. They did clean up at the end of the day (4 stars rated) and piled all the trash on the driveway. It would be better if they have a dumpster for this purpose. The final clean up was adequate but you need to comb for nails after they leave. I picked up a dozen of nails on my lawn and on the drive way (which is not too bad, just hope I won't have any flat tire from the unfound nails).
Overall they deserve a 5 stars rated and I would recommend their service.
This review for Hoyt Roofs is way overdue! Completely satisfied with Hoyt Roofing and highly recommend!
Five years ago, we hired Hoyt to replace our house's original (1980 built) wood shake roof with a complete tear off and new clay tiles installed, replaced old skylight, added a new skylight, and installed new rain gutters.
That original wood shake roof was in bad shape. There were some leaks because some darn raccoons had torn holes in the old crumbling wood shake and got inside the attic; when it rained, it leaked into those holes!
We got about five roofing estimates and were not impressed or confident with the other companies. These other roofing companies sales representatives were just that - sales. If you had a more technical question, they could not answer and said they would get back to us.
Chuck from Hoyt was very professional but also super knowledgeable. Chuck was able to answer all questions on the spot and also point out other options, suggestions, or ways to do the roof, so he really knows his business! Hoyt also has their own crews and do not sub out the work like tear off and they also carry their own insurance.
Hoyt's estimate was not the lowes nor not the highest, but we felt that Chuck and Hoyt would do the best job for us so we went with Hoyt and we were not disappointed.
Chuck was able to coordinate their tear off timing to allow our painters to do their job. After the tear off (real dusty!) and removal of the rotten termite damaged and infested wood, they layed down the new plywood or OSB (can't recall now) and also applied the special fabric material. Then our painters were able to easily walk on the roof to power wash, plastic and tape the windows, prep, sand, and paint and not worry about slipping or cracking any of our new (and expensive!) clay tiles. Because of some super high gusty winds that week, it took over a week for the painters to finish.
After the painters were done, Hoyt started laying down the tiles. The Hoyt crews were also very neat. They would clean up at the end of the day and blow and sweep up all the wood and nail debris on our property and also asked the neighbors. This was greatly appreciated, as one neighbor and their roofer never offered to clean up their nails and debris on our side yard where our dog would often walk! So when they were re-roofing on that side, I'd keep our dog inside the house the whole time to avoid having her get hit by or step on nails or wood debris.
After the tiles were completed, they did the replacement and new skylights. Then the rain gutters. And Hoyt also took care of pulling the required city permits and getting all the approvals and signatures, so we didn't even have to go to city hall! Communication with Chuck and the roofing crew was always excellent.
Do be prepared for the high cost of replacing the old termite, dry rot damaged wood. We kind of were exepecting it to be high and sadly it was, almost $5,000. Chuck did warn us about it and here in So Cal, termites are everywhere so don't be surprised. At least the new wood Hoyt used to replace the damaged termite infested wood was treated with Timbor, to help deter future termite damage to those new wood replacement pieces.
So, we were extremely satisfied with Hoyt's work on our house and it's been five years and the roof still looks great and no leaks! And the raccoons can't tear up the clay tile!
This year in spring, we re-roofed my mother in law's house up in LA. Smaller house and single story. The asphault roof was about 10 years old but already in bad shape and several leaks from who knows where.
Got several estimates up there and also asked Hoyt if they worked up in LA. Chuck came up and went on the roof to measure and do the estimate. He noted that the roof was not ""installed"" properly and didn't have adequate ventilation and was ""cooking"" itself. Which kind of explained to us why that house was always super hot!
After reviewing the estimates (again, in the middle), we again felt confident with Hoyt's estimate and gave them the approval to start. Again, fast tear off crew, good workers, cleaned up at the end of each day. Also quite a bit of termite/dry rot damaged wood to replace, but not as bad as our house five years ago! This roof went on much quicker, since it wasn't the clay or concrete tiles.
We also had them blow in new insulation in the attic while the roof was open. The new insulation and the new roof have made the house much cooler; I was very surprised when we went up to the house a couple of weeks ago at the end of August when all of Southern and Central California was having high 90's and even 100+ degree temps. It was 108 outside and while the house was warm, we weren't sweating like you normally would have before!
So, we have highly recommended Hoyt Roofing and Chuck when asked about roofing. We tell them to get several detailed estimates but to make sure they get one from Chuck at Hoyt Roofs!
We just did a tile relay and it went very well. Chuck was very professional and his crew did a great job. Chuck gave me a quote on the spot. I had to wait over 2 weeks to get quotes from other bidders. He identified potential issues upfront so we did not have any big surprises. The job site was cleaned up every day - something my neighbors really appreciated - and the job was completed in the expected time frame. A few minor things came up during the project and Chuck was on top of them coordinating the needed professionals to fix the problems. I would highly recommend Hoyt Roofs for your next roofing project!
Lisa M.Hoyt Roof Inc. did an amazing job! We highly recommend them! Our roof was in very bad shape with severe wood damage and tiles falling off. They have an amazing crew! Each crew specializes in a different aspect of the roof replacement. One crew does demolition and removal of old roof. The other takes care of the wood replacement. Then the final crew places the new tiles. From start to finish it took them 4 working days!!! They took care of all aspects of roof replacement... permits etc. The only thing we had to do was choose our tile color. They were quick, efficient, respectful, and very clean!! They all wore masks at all times. Our new roof looks beautiful! Thank you Hoyt Roofs Inc. for a job well done!
Megan M.We just got our roof done and Chuck was amazing at explaining everything and the roofer were so nice a respectful. They did a great job and cleaned up after themselves! I have already recommended them to several family members and friends!
Hoyt Roofing installed our entire roof in 5 days from June 8 thru June 12.
Charles(Chuck)Woldhuis and his crew Kenny,
Marcos-On Site Supervisor, Santos-Supervisor,
Takeo and everyone did an outstanding job.
On-time and according to plan. Clean up each day thru the final day was excellent.
Communication between me, Chuck and Kenny worked extremely well throughout the project. Their follow up on specific items was always quick.
I would highly recommend them for any of your roofing jobs.
HEK Homeowner.
I recently had my roofing replaced by Hoyt while I was out of town.
1. Chuck was always very responsive to my calls and texts
2. I felt like Chuck went above and beyond to ensure I understood every aspect of the job
3. I felt Chuck provided me with detailed information so that I was poised to make many decisions on what direction to go with my roof (for example I had some prior knowledge about upgrading to ice and water shield in certain prone areas of the roof and he guided me)
4. I have already referred them to neighbors
5. My direct next door neighbors stated the crews were very respectful about cleaning any debris, noise, etc
6. When I arrived back into town they walked the job with me and touched up a few items that I requested
PM with any questions if you'd like
Erica T.If I could give a 0 I would. The workers that completed our roof job were very messy and did not clean up thoroughly after the job was completed.
The office personnel Angie was very rude and unprofessional.
The company did not communicate about the job in areas where things could have gone wrong. There was really no one who came back out to properly inspect the job. The workers took off our cap to our water heater and when asked where it was to put it back on they said they would have to find it. Well they never found it and never replaced it. The piping for our heater in the attic was taken apart and not put back together. No one communicated to us that it may fall off while the work is being done. It would have been nice to know that it was off as it could have been a hazard running our heater and us breathing carbon monoxide.
Just overall not a good experience.
