This review is a long time coming, I should have posted it long ago.
The owner, Chris, was great to work with. The crew was quick and professional. The roof looks awesome. Good people to work with.
Jenn O.I absolutely HATE doing this, but I also don't appreciate this lack of respect. I had Chris come out and give me an estimate back in May 2020. He did. And had been the ONLY roofing company that came and did NOT try to up sale me for a new roof. I took him for honest! WOW! I was hooked right then and there. I had found my Roofer!! or so I thought.
Being that I had other things that had to be dealt with such as a plumbing fiasco, and the need to update the electrical system. I was slowly getting back around to the roof by Oct.
This year has been anything but normal, by any means.
I have found more con's than legit service providers!! A very expensive lesson to learn.
I dug out my estimate for Golden State Roofing, and sent him an email. No response.
Now before I get going too far down this recount - while waiting for my estimate back in May, I really got frustrated. It seemed to take Chris extremely long to get back to me. I was at the point to throw in the towel back then. But having more projects on my plate than I really could handle at that time, I let it slide.
Coming back to Oct/Nov 2020, I emailed him letting him know that I was ready to move forward with the repair.
Weeks go by, without a response. No email/call.
My dad used to have a roofing company. It's hard work and it can get overwhelming, in the seasons.. i know.
However, the one thing besides honesty that my dad stuck by was 'communication'. He said it was better to answer than not. Business can dry up without proper communication.
As he stated back then, it is the customer that makes the business run successful. Not the owner or the workers, but the customers.
Without the customers, there would be no business.
I decided to reach out to him, after our 1st rain a few weeks ago. He answered, and after speaking for a few minutes remembered who I was.
He said he'd need to look into his notes when he got home that night and would call me back at the number that showed up in his cellie the next day, some time. Well, that never happened. I hate this! I hate being brushed under the rug. I just don't understand why people do this.
I made up my mind, ""who am I to make you come out and fix my leaky roof"". I won't force anyone to help. I need reliability!
So I began to call out other companies to gather estimates again. I had a horrible experience with to nitwits on my roof stomping on the tile and one of the hippo's while kicking my tiles back into place, broke 2.
I was livid. Said hippo, proceeded to turn around, after he figured out I had been watching him, and tell me ""you have 2 broken tiles"", I laughed, not because it was funny. But the audacity of this cow on my roof. He got caught kicking the tiles and bold faced lied how they were broke. I told him that ''NO! I don't or didn't have broken tile"" until he showed up.. My gosh! where do morons come from! And how do I seem to find them..
I decided it was in my best interest to call Chris again. Let go of the anger I had of him, not following through on his word. Giving him every excuse in the book. Well, I did. I had to jiggle his brain as to who I was. I didn't rub his nose in the fact he had dropped the ball.
As long as, my roof got repaired the right way, none of the other mattered.
He told me he would call me back the next evening, to tell me closer to when he could get to me.. but at that time, told me 3 weeks.
Now that he has once again skipped the call, it leaves me unsure of whether or no he actually has me on his 'to do list' in 3 weeks down the road. I don't know. Being that he hasn't kept his word with me yet.
I absolutely HATE putting up a review like this. But as I walk into my kitchen and hear the wobble of a tile that was not properly replaced by the nitwits that broke 2, from a different company. I know I cannot wait to see, IF Chris has got my back or not.
I literally have an emergency and I have no other choice than to weed through all these con's again to find someone equal to that, that I thought I saw in Chris. I guess I expected too much.. Like I stated, he gained my trust and respect when he didn't try to up sale upon our 1st meet.
He reminded me of my father in which he had integrity, a good heart, he is humble and kind. He's genuine and not like the rest.. in character
but this lack of communication is, his downfall. Which leads me back to lack of trust. I hope no one else, winds up in the same boat waiting on Chris to respond. I know I have to have someone out soon. The winds that have picked up, are horrendous! And listening to the tile wobble back and forth next to my skylight, makes me all kinds of uneasy. Though that error is not his fault, it's just the my push to move on.. knowing I cannot trust someone who doesn't keep his word. Crap, an email would do..
I won't bother the man again. I don't feel as though I should have to pester anyone to do a job for me.
I am truly more than disappointed!!
I cannot recommend these guys enough.
We recently bought a house from the 80s. During escrow multiple professionals informed us we needed a new roof and that our was original from 1985. It had been patched everywhere in different ways. At one point it had a leak. When negotiating with the sellers we got a couple estimates. One being from this company. We went on to get 7 more estimates (roofs are expensive and I wanted the right ppl for us!).
The biggest factor for me was price and communication. They were fairly priced and I cannot rave enough about the owners communication. I called him multiple times before we were scheduled and he answered everytime. He texted us info. During the process he was very clear and sent pictures/texts.
The workers were respectful and happy. I feel like workers were that happy are going to do a good job and must have good management.
We feel like if anything were to happen in the future, we'd be taken care of by them. Multiple neighbors complimented the company after they were done and told us they were impressed.
Called Hector twice and leaving messages. No response! Called third time and dpoke to him regarding a project to view and submit a quote. Said he would get to it but yet nothing from him for two weeks. Called back again and left message to please return call and give me an idea if he is going to quote or Not.
Have yet to get a return call.
This is how you do not run a business. Good luck and good riddance.
Sandy C.Chris McCluskey, the owner of Golden State Roofers goes above and beyond reasonable expectations. We were fortunate enough to see his work before talking to him about our project. We did get other bids and his was not the lowest but he was the first to respond. Within a couple of days from our original conversation, Chris had e-mailed us a bid. Everything was spelled out and he left nothing to question. Chris is very knowledgeable about products and was very helpful in helping us chose colors along with badly needed attic vents. He never pushed for better options but explained the benefits of all options. Our job was started on time, there was never a mess, and our job was finished in a timely manner. We had a couple extra sheds that need repair too and they were taken care of with the same professionalism as our home. I don't expect to be needing Chris's services again, but would certainly recommend his company to anybody who needs a professional roofer. Thank you Chris and Golden State Roofers
Mike G.I was in escrow to buy a house but the loan company was requiring me to get the roof certified. The roof was only a few years old and I found out Golden State Roofing had done the job. I called Chris and he was more the happy to stand by the quality of his work. He came out and made sure everything still looked good and got me the roof certificate my loan company wanted.
If you want someone that's friendly and stands by their work, this is your place.
nicole S.We suspected a roof leak after opening up some walls to replumb our house. Golden State came to check it out about 10 minutes after I called. No roof leak but fixed a loose/cracked vent, no charge. I just wanted to thank him for being an awesome business owner in Nipomo. You'll be the first person we call when we have roofing needs. Thank you!
Jennifer M.Chris is AMAZING... he came out fast & in the rain on a weekend!!! As a Realtor, I can't be more grateful for how attentive and responsive he is! I have HAPPY clients thanks to Chris... he is my go to guy!
Thank you Chris for saving today's escrow.

Patty B.Chris put a new roof on our house in Grover Beach and we couldn't be happier. The work was done well and he was accommodating with us since we don't live in the area. We highly recommend Golden State Roofing and Chris McClusky.
What a pleasure to deal with this company. Chris provided a fair bid promptly, worked with our scheduling and had a crew on the job on the morning he promised. They were efficient and cleaned up their debris. Then, I found they had vacuumed up the carpets inside. What an amazing team. I would not hesitate to give them a gold star!. Very impressive and I highly recommend them
