Soon after their wedding, Michael started traveling between Alaska and Texas. He even purchased some property in Littlefield during his downtime. When he discovered those rentals required new roofs, an uncle connected him with Trellis Summers. That first conversation ignited a friendship, leading Michael to work roofing jobs on the side for the next two years.

He recognized that he was missing significant moments at home during his time away. He sought guidance from his faith to determine his next move. In 1995, he opted for a retirement package from the oil fields and invested in the roofing company he was part of, renaming it Fortenberry Roofing.
