Soon after their wedding, Michael started traveling between Alaska and Texas. He also bought some real estate in Littlefield during his off hours. Upon realizing those rentals needed new roofs, an uncle referred him to Trellis Summers. Their initial chat sparked a friendship, prompting Michael to take on roofing jobs during his days off for the next two years.

He recognized that he was missing significant moments at home during his time away. He sought guidance from his faith to determine his next move. In 1995, he took a retirement package from the oil industry and put that money into the roofing company he was with, renaming it Fortenberry Roofing.
