Soon after their wedding, Michael started traveling between Alaska and Texas. He also bought some real estate in Littlefield during his off hours. When he discovered those rentals required new roofs, an uncle connected him with Trellis Summers. That first conversation ignited a friendship, leading Michael to work roofing jobs on the side for the next two years.

Michael realized he was missing too much at home while away. He turned to his faith for guidance on his next steps. In 1995, he took a retirement package from the oil industry and put that money into the roofing company he was with, renaming it Fortenberry Roofing.
