Excelsior reroofed a small section of our roof to solve a problem with a leak at the sliding glass door that opens onto the roof. They recommended a contractor who removed the sliding glass door so that Excelsior could extend the roofing underneath the door (which is how it should have been done in the first place).

They showed up on time, cleaned up after doing their work, and seemed to do a good job. It's summer now, so I'll find out in the rainy season how the work holds up, but it should be good.

Our roof just needed some maintenance -- we had a couple small leaks around vent pipes and the roof needed to be repainted.

The estimate was clear and thorough and the estimator was pleasant and easy to communicate with. They gave me practical recommendations that were in-line with the excellent inspection I had when I purchased the home a few months ago.

I'd had another estimator out earlier in the day that I couldn't communicate well with, and that didn't listen to what I wanted. They gave me an estimate for a whole roof replacement, which wasn't what I was looking for. (We can easily get a few more years on the roof, and want to integrate the roof replacement into a remodeling plan)

Anyway, Excelsior scheduled an appointment a couple weeks out, but had a last-minute cancellation and pinged me to see if they could come by and do the job early. They banged it out in a couple hours, were super polite about some initial confusion (my wife wasn't expecting them and totally grilled them -- thinking they were the other roofing company trying to pull a fast one on us), took before and after pictures and beat the big storm that rolled in later that week.

We haven't had any leaks since, and the roof looks great.

Excelsior did a repair job on my roof, which included three tile wings. They were fast and professional, the best roofers in San Francisco. They arrived when they said they would, did the work that they said they would, finished when they said they would. They were particularly attentive about cleaning up. It is true that they are more expensive than other contractors, but I feel that you get what you pay for, plus they are insured, unionized workers.

We had Excelsior come out as part of getting bids 3 or so years ago when our home inspector said that he could see some dryrot from water leaking from the roof. Two roofers told us we needed a new roof without even looking at the roof (it's a flat roof, so you can't see it from the ground)! Excelsior did the professional thing and went on the roof, identified the problem and fixed it, and we've had no problems since. More recently, we had a mystery leak on roof at a lower level in one of our lightwells. They identified the issue and were clear in their bid. On the day of work, their team was phenomenal. They arrived a few minutes early so that I could leave to take my son to school on time, and then showed me the key steps of the repair as they were doing it (I work from home, so I was interested in seeing what was going on and how the pieces all fit together). They also had to move a pipe to get to one side of the roof in order to seal it correctly, and I got a call at 8pm tonight (as agreed) to ensure that our upstairs neighbors had time to run their water to test for leaks. Plus, when they left this afternoon, the roof and area below were swept up immaculately.

We really appreciated their professionalism and attention to detail!

We have used Excelsior Roofing for the past ten years. They put a flat roof on our home in Pacifica, repaired flashing around a chimney still under warranty, installed skylights, and corrected leaks caused by contractor's when solar panels were installed. Excellent quality work and an outstanding reputation. Excelsior just completed a 4 layer job on our residence completing the work in one long day instead of the planned two days. The men were courteous and diligent workers. They cleaned up the property well. Mark Powers was prompt with updates on estimated dates despite the unpredictable weather this winter. The job looks fantastic and they posted photos on a well known site.

Disclosure: I am writing this review based on the a single visit from Mark. I have not yet decided which roofer to use for my project.

I live in San Mateo and I have a leak in my roof. Mark came down to the peninsula to provide a free estimate to either fix it or replace the roof. He arrived right on time and kindly spent an hour with me discussing the various options. He was candid in his assessment of how to save money on the project. In fact, he mentioned several ways that I could do the job cheaper by using other contractors rather than his own firm. I was impressed and grateful for his honesty. I highly recommend calling Excelsior.

I got a roof cap sealed up in Oct. 2010 after I did most of the installation myself. They did a great job, gave me some good tips, and spent about 2 hours with two guys for about $250... sounds like a good deal and they did excellent work. PLUS, the guy I spoke with said they're union guys who get medical insurance and such... that's nice to hear, especially since their prices are reasonable.

I recently had 3 layers of shingle torn off my house and a completely new roof put on. I got bids from several companies. Excelsior wasn't the cheapest, but I got a really good feeling from Mark's ability to communicate and address the details of the job, so it seemed like a good investment--and I was so right. It's easy for a contractor to hand-wave and for the customer to just hope that things will be done right, but I know from hard experience that the ""devil is in the details"" and it's easy to run into problems. Someone who addresses things clearly and really knows his stuff is worth a lot.

My situation was complicated because of the position of my house in relation to my neighbors' and the fact that my house has leaked for years from unknown sources.

My experience with Excelsior was stellar. Mark was fantastic about working things out with my neighbors, he found an open seam of my house that wasn't visible to me and likely causing leaks and fixed it (it wasn't on the roof), he warned me up front about all the possible problems, he was really on the ball about creatively customizing the job to resolve the issues at my house.

When the guys were here, the foreman, Richard, was communicative and pleasant, and all the guys were nice. Some roofers use unskilled laborers but I was glad to know these were union workers who knew what they were doing! They spent a lot of attention on detail and doing things well, they cleaned up beautifully, they were available if I needed to talk to them--it was really quite good.

We had one mishap, when someone walking on the scaffolding accidentally broke a window pane, but they immediately called a window guy to come replace it. Roofing is a heavy job with lots of heavy equipment and of course sometimes things happen--but they handled it beautifully.

And then the joy, when it poured rain, and for once, my house didn't leak! Finally--a roofer with a Facebook page, so my house was famous for a day--can't beat it! :-)

They are the best roofing contractors in the city. We used them 13 years ago to redo our roof and guess what. It is still good! Before we worked with them the roof had to be redone in less than 10 years. I just had them out to do some touch up around the flashing and perimeters and we had no problem during this last monsoon. They are old school and a San Francisco institution. Their prices are great and they just get in and do the job.
