Company Overview

Espy Lumber Company, Inc. was established by Wesley Espy in 1958 under the name Espy Concrete Company, Inc. Two years post the completion of the first bridge linking the island to the mainland, the company commenced its business on Hilton Head. The early business primarily involved delivering concrete to the nascent resort projects.

As Hilton Head's population surged from 900 to 2,500 during the 1960s, the company expanded its offerings to include lumber and construction materials. This growth led to the company outgrowing its original location on present-day Pope Avenue. In 1971, Espy Lumber secured two acres of what is now a five-acre site on Arrow Road. Construction was finalized, and Espy Lumber relocated to its current site in 1972. In the 1970s, the concrete operations were divested, and the lumber and building materials business thrived, prompting the purchase of an adjacent three-acre lot for future development.

In the autumn of 1978, Wesley Espy was killed in a vehicle accident, leading to the estate putting the company up for sale. Mike started at Espy Lumber as an outside salesman in June 1982, becoming General Manager in 1986 and Vice President in 1993. On July 1, 2013, the Board of Directors appointed Mike as President of Espy Lumber Co.

Born in Macon, Georgia, Mike grew up in Vidalia and attended Valdosta State College, where he studied business and marketing.

Mike engages in numerous community and industry activities: Point Comfort Property Owners Association (Board Member 1993-1994, President 1994-1995, ARB Member 2000-present), Hilton Head Home Builders Association (Board of Directors, Associate Council Vice President 1995, Associate of the Year 1995), SBMA (Board of Directors), State Director for Home Builders Association 1998, Hilton Head Baseball Association (Board of Directors), and Dixie Youth Baseball (Coach). Mike is a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church as well.
