Company Overview

Espy Lumber Company, Inc. was established by Wesley Espy in 1958 under the name Espy Concrete Company, Inc. The company started its operations on Hilton Head two years after the construction of the first bridge connecting the island to the mainland. Initially, the focus was on supplying concrete to the developing resort areas.

With the population of Hilton Head rising from 900 to 2,500 in the 1960s, the company broadened its scope to include lumber and construction materials. As a result, the business expanded beyond its first location on what is now known as Pope Avenue. The year 1971 saw the acquisition of two acres of the existing five-acre site on Arrow Road. The new construction was completed, allowing Espy Lumber to move to its present location in 1972. During the 1970s, the concrete division was sold, while the lumber and building materials segment continued to grow, leading to the acquisition of an additional three-acre parcel for future expansion.

Wesley Espy tragically passed away in a car accident in the fall of 1978, prompting the estate to offer the company for sale. Mike joined Espy Lumber in June 1982 as an outside salesman, rising to General Manager in 1986 and later becoming Vice President in 1993. On July 1, 2013, the Board of Directors appointed Mike as President of Espy Lumber Co.

Born in Macon, Georgia, Mike grew up in Vidalia and attended Valdosta State College, where he studied business and marketing.

Mike is involved in various community and industry organizations: Point Comfort Property Owners Association (Board Member 1993-1994, President 1994-1995, ARB Member 2000-present), Hilton Head Home Builders Association (Board of Directors, Associate Council Vice President 1995, Associate of the Year 1995), SBMA (Board of Directors), State Director for Home Builders Association 1998, Hilton Head Baseball Association (Board of Directors), and Dixie Youth Baseball (Coach). Additionally, he is a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
