Last October I purchased a home which had been built in 1929. During the process, almost everyone I dealt with--from my real estate agent, to the loan broker, to the contractor I hired to level the foundation!--were dishonest & unprofessional. David Horn was the exact opposite! He and his employees were professional, courteous, fair & (most importantly!) honest. I would highly recommend this roofing company!

I requested an estimate for my roughly $10K job (installing new insulation and decking, replacing old roofing, repairing some fascia) and made an appointment for 2pm. At 3:20pm, he phoned and said he wouldn't make it because of traffic. He asked to reschedule for the next day and I stated I would be home from 1-3pm. He said he was trying to get out of town for vacation and that wouldn't work...after he had asked specifically to come that day.

Still on the phone, he asked a few questions about my project and I answered with details. He asked how many roofing bids I had received and I said 4. He suddenly stated, ""Well, I really don't know when I'd be able to get around to your job. I have 4 months of work in front of me."" If you have 4 months of work in front of you, why did you agree to give me an estimate to begin with?

If this is the way he treats potential customers who are doing their own due diligence to obtain multiple bids on costly projects, then I cringe to wonder how he would handle his customers if problems, change orders or delays arose during a project.

When I think of what a professional should exude in the workplace, it is most certainly not David Horn. Thanks for making my decision very easy!

We recently purchased a historic bed and breakfast in the Aptos area and had David put on a new roof. The building is over 100 years old and had extensive damage, dry to, etc. 3-4 layers of old roof had to come off before even beginning the new roof. He gave us a very good idea of what we would be up against and there were no surprises that weren't to be expected on a building as old as ours. His communication was great throughout the job and we now have a roof that will last a long time!

Besides a new roof, we also had roof repairs that needed attention, done in just slightly over a week. Loving our new roof!

We had extensive termite damage on our rental home affecting the roof and some of the siding. We had to come in from out of state and find someone to do the work quickly. He led us through a project that had multiple issues with ease.We felt his estimate was competitive. David Horn spent a good amount of time during our first visit explaining what needed to be done to correct all the problems. He is knowledgeable, self assured and was able to have his team work on roof, siding, windows,a skylight, fencing, gutters and decking. His timeline on completing the project was accurate. He was there everyday checking on his workers progress. As the work progressed he would show me what was being replaced and why. He also took extensive pictures of damage that I later found helpful for tax purposes. He even set us up with a painter that was reasonable and I will use in the future. The men he used worked consistently. The end result was exactly what I had hoped for and his deadline was accurate. We feel lucky to have found someone that could cover all the issues needed done in such a short amount of time.

His crew were accomplished craftsmen and professional in their behavior. David kept me posted on a daily basis as to any issues that arose or decisions that needed to be made. My wife and I recently purchased a home in Santa Cruz and like all real estate purchases there were a series of inspections that were done. Well after getting the initial roof inspection report from another local roofing company that simply stated in a one line summary that my roof and rain gutters needed to be replaced for a total cost of $14,000 I decided at least to get a second opinion. So I won't name names but I got a total of 6 estimates from other roofing companies ranging from $7,000 all the way up to $20,000! Long story short, I didn't go with the cheapest, just because of that old saying 'you get what you pay for'...so after much deliberation I went with David Horn roofing and am glad I did.

Why I initially hired David Horn Roofing (DHR):
I spoke at length to David, who personally took the time to stop by my place a few times and discuss the issues that my roof definitely needed addressed. He clarified some of the issues that the other roofing company inspectors pointed out to me, and since I'm no roofing expert, nor did I understand some of the roofing trade lingo, David took the time to explain to me in detail what I asked him about. Plus while doing some renovations inside my house, I came across an odd ceiling rafter that I wasn't sure what its structural function was, so I called David and he came right over and went up in my attic and explained what it was and that it didn't affect what I was doing below it. That was something he didn't have to do and he did it on his own time with no charge or cost to me. It just showed the commitment he has

DHR's PRICING:
DHR's bid was not only competitive but I was still able to negotiate a bit, making the total reroofing cost more affordable to us.

DHR's REVIEWS:
One thing I would like to point out, is that sometimes you read some negative comments or reviews (here and elsewhere) that are mixed in with good ones, so I did bring up to David my reservations of hiring him based on the negative review I did read, and he explained to me the situation on why that particular customer wasn't happy, which made me feel more at ease as the explanation was more than satisfactory. Plus the issue of the particular review I read had to do with upfront payment and lack of response, both of which were NOT issues whatsoever with my experience with DHR. My point is I didn't let one person's negative experience turn me away from giving my business to a local company.


DHR's CREW:
As soon as I made my contract deposit, DHR's roofing crew was up on my roof starting to remove the old wood shingle roof and rain gutters, and they made quick work of it. All the workers were using proper safety equipment (which was big on my list of concerns). They worked late into the night on the 2nd or 3rd day due to possible rain and didn't leave my roof exposed to the weather.

They were very speedy and hardworking individuals. I talked to them regularly because I was working from home while the job was going on and they were very polite and pointed out the issues they found on my roof after the shingles were removed. They were also nice enough to take my flooring debris with them in their truck loads of roofing debris, which was very convenient for me as well.

DHR's WORK:
What can I say other than we're extremely pleased with not only how my home looks like now (up to date not dated with the old wooden shingles) but just our luck, as soon as it was completed the heavy rain came that following weekend! Talk about perfect timing.
Before replacing my roof, there was at least one verified leak in the attic, now its weather proof for years to come!
The work was done in a very timely manner, only taking 2 days longer than originally expected and that was due to a weather delay and unforseen repairs. The crew always cleaned up at the end of every work day, making sure there were no nails or other metal debris around the perimeter of my house, which was very much appreciated.

OVERALL:
I did my due diligence in researching and getting bids on my roofing job, as you should as well, but after careful consideration I decided to go with DHR not only because of their extended ties with the Santa Cruz community, but because of the personal level of communication, the competitive pricing, the roofing crew's speed, and the overall great job and appearance of my roof. I'm a very satisfied customer and I don't have any reservations of recommending DHR to anyone else in need of residential roofing.
