We had Cosmos Roofing install our tar & gravel roof a
few years ago. We had foam insulation installed with
a white gravel surface. They put the roof design on
graph paper, increased the drainage for better water
flow off the roof, and replaced the damaged wood we
had acquired from the old roof. They did a great job.
The house is much cooler in the summer and warmer
in the winter and we have had no leaks.

Rich Cosmos, one of the owners personally managed
the roof, starting the crew off at 8 am each morning.
They finished in 3 days, left the home and yard
spotless. We had to put no down payment which told
us of their commitment to do a good job. The roof then
passed final inspection and we were billed.

We highly recommend them! We had a great
experience as far as contractors go.

Let me say this. Rich Cosmos stands by his products and warranty. I have had a few issues with our roof since installation in fall of 2008. In each instance, Rich had a technician out the same day I called and they promptly resolved the issue.

To me, with contractors and housing work, what they do after the work is complete and they receive your money speaks volumes. Many others would put their past customers behind potential new customers but I don't get that impression with Cosmos Roofing.

After getting four bids for reproofing my rental in San Jose I chose Cosmos Roofing because they have been in business since 1975, they know their product well and give 20 years transferable guarantee.

I had them convert my wood roof to composition shingle. They were very professional, showed up on time and completed the work in 3 days.

It was a very pleasant experience with a contractor and I highly recommend them to anyone who needs new roof or repairs.

Update! Update!
This is a follow-on report to my previous (3/10/2010) Review of Cosmos Roofing.
Rich Cosmos, owner of this business, had recently posted an addendum note, requesting that I contact him directly. I did, and the experience since then has been much more than satisfactory.

Whereas, I had been prepared to share the repair costs, the ridge capping was totally replaced, at no charge to me -- and with a totally new warranty. In addition, the Cosmos workmen made several other touch-up tasks that were 'above and beyond'.

The work was timely (as promised), and the personnel very professional. Whatever their internal problems of a couple years ago were, they seem to have been resolved -- at least to my own total satisfaction. Certainly now worthy of a 5* rating.

Short story: They did a great job and were very responsive and attentive throughout the whole process. Long story: I met with and researched multiple roofers for the re-roof of my new home. They were one of the few that took the time to walk the roof with me and discuss the issues and their suggested approaches (our roof is low slope and had some drainage issues). Cosmo's price was competitive and, since they are a family business with a long history, I decided to go with them. The crew started and finished on time, and the foreman were very good at keeping me apprised of their progress; they were also available via email and text message (which still seems to be a rarity among contractors). They ended up significantly improving the roof's drainage, and took the time to repair items that were not in their original scope (free of charge). As an engineer, I warned them that I would be picky, but they took care of all of my concerns with no complaints.

The job was delivered on-time and on-budget, which was quite an accomplishment considering the unpredictable weather they dealt with. I would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

Alex was great to work with. He quickly went to my house and was able to provide a competitive offer. Once hired, he had removed my old roof and replaced it with a new roof all in one week. Also took care of everything with the City of Palo Alto within that week. Very pleased with the work and would use them again!!!

i am very impressed by cosmos' services and quality. cosmos was recommended by our agent who has worked with them for long time. i found them to be highly professional and work was completed as promised. alex was great to work. i will have them work on all my roof jobs with my rentals.

Roll back the clock to 2002. Cosmos replaced our shake roof with a Presidential TL (top of the line) composition roof. Big roof, and they did it really fast -- 2 days. They replaced all the gutters and downspouts, added a solar roof fan, added vents -- the whole thing. I was mostly happy with the roof -- lifetime roof, 8 year warranty, but the shingles didn't quite line up and for all that money I wanted something nicer looking. I wasn't pleased that the workmen used a corner of my yard as a toilet.

Over the years the roof has not aged well:

The solar roof fan is non-functional -- solar panel was installed in the wrong place and the fan never worked.
One of my gutters is falling off; there's no flashing on it so water runs between the house and the gutter.
Three other gutters have permanent standing water, including one that has the drain sticking up 3/8"" in the gutter bottom.
The vents have improperly trimmed shingles around them.

I knew there were problems so I started calling them last year -- first with warranty request calls, and then later using a more nebulous ""hi! I'd love to talk to you about my roof!"" I never was able to reach a person, so over the course of about a year I left about six messages.

I NEVER got a call back, ever. And now the warranty has expired.

I'm getting estimates now and it's going to be over $1k to repair stuff that should have been covered by their warranty in the first place that was mostly caused by their doing a fast and sloppy job. Blech.

Cosmos removed an old shake roof and replaced it with a composition roof. The also removed and replaced all gutters and downspouts.

Cosmos showed up on time and finished the roof as scheduled (a little over 2 days). The on-site foreman introduced himself before the work started. The workmen were very professional and efficient. There were always 5 - 6 employees working on the roof at all times. The work was amazingly well orchestrated. As they finished one part of the job, the supplies and appropriate employees were arriving for the next part of the job. It was absolutely seamless. The only time the work stopped was when they were waiting for the city inspector to do an ""in progress"" inspection. Cosmos left no mess and gave us drop clothes to cover our stuff in the garage. The first rains demonstrated that the new roof and gutters were working well.

The bidding process was also very professional and candid. Cosmos didn't try to sell me what wasn't need and were very open about the various roofing options. They were price competitive and the project came in on time and on budget. No surprises. We would we use Cosmos again -- absolutely. Would we recommend them to our friends - absolutely.

Cosmos put the roof on my house 20 years ago and it always was trouble free. When I installed solar panels this spring they were brought in to install a new roof before the panels were installed. They did a great job. Cosmos project manager, Alex, worked seamlessly with the solar installer. The crews were clean and organized. The workmanship was excellent and they showed good attention to detail. If I ever do another roof Cosmos has my business.
