So...what have I been doing during the months of Sept.-Oct.?
A good chunk of September was spent covering everything in my house with plastic, in preparation for raining debris.
Because when you have an old house with vaulted ceilings, there are likely to be big spaces between the interior boards. When your roof is torn off, a crapload of crap falls through those spaces & continues throughout the demo & installation of the new roof.
I've been living in my plastic fantastic wonderland for weeks.
But...let me backtrack a smidge.
I hadn't planned to tear off the top of my house - the intention was just to fix water leaks around the chimney. A couple of contractors (not roofers) have struggled to address the leaks for a couple of years, to no avail.
So I decided it was time to call in the big guns a.k.a. Chandler's. They are waterproofing experts.
Last month's chimney job was no small project. Long story short, it will not ever leak again.
And during that experience I began to learn about the problematic valleys involved in my multi-level roof.
Someone had put on a room addition years ago. Someone else had put on a cheapo roof just before I got the house a few years back. Nothing from above had been done correctly.
So I decided to go ahead with a new roof, under which would be rigid insulation. Did I mention that the house has been freezing cold in ""winter""? I've suspected the heat went up and out, right through those spaces in the ceiling, right through the previous cheesy thin shingles.
In summer, it's been bloody hot for the same reason.
Not no more.
My new roof has 2 inches of insulation & shingles so thick the workers had a helluva time cutting them with a blade.
All the fascia had to be changed to accommodate the insulation. The gutters had to be changed, too.
My new roof is so rad that the house is quieter than before. And, it looks really beautiful.
There are less expensive ways to re-roof & less expensive roofers. But, with a roof as well as many other things, you get what you pay for.
Brian, one of the bosses at Chandler's, has been handling my job from day one.
He answers his phone every time I call.
His workers have been with the company for years, some for decades.
Everybody knows what they're doing & demonstrates pride of workmanship.
The highest-quality materials are used, right down to the caulk.
The dang roof will outlast me by about a hundred years.
More good news: we're almost done.
Bad news for my cat, who loves playing under all the interior plastic ""tents"".
Messy as it has been, this huge job had to be done. And if it ever rains again in SoCal, I'm ready. Let it pour.
With Chandler's, I have no complaints. From previous experience, I already thought they were the best for my job before I hired them.
Now I know for sure.

I appreciate this company's professionalism and I will use them every time. The ladies in the office are super efficient and delightful to speak with. They have been around for awhile and will stick behind their work unlike other roofers. I've had a lot of experience with roofers and have not had a problem working with them. 4 stars from me!

After waiting two days to get an initial response to them I had to wait another half a week until they could get to my house. We discussed my solar power needs and what I wanted and was told I would have a response in 3 days... A week and a half later I contacted them and they asked for another 2 days to get a response to me. THREE days later I called and asked where it was and they said they would have it the next day.
The response, when finally sent, was only one of the two different type of proposals I had asked for and 50% more system than I would need and over 50% more expensive than anything we had ever discussed as a possible budget. I asked them what if I bought my own system and they said give them another week... well after two weeks they seem to have lost interest or decided I was not going to be their next milk cow.
Obviously they have too much business right now, a problem that tends to be self-correcting.

From the first time I contacted Chandler's until the day the job was done, everything was smooth and awesome. I am so happy with my roof! The work was done really well and the crew here at my house was so polite and nice. Blake is the man - he made me feel informed and taken care of throughout the process. I was really happy with the whole office team too - Erica and the billing manager were both very professional and nice. Loved working with a locally owned company here in San Pedro to get my roof done. Also - they look at energy efficiency as a really important feature, and I like that a lot. Especially since my house has no HVAC and gets warm/cold. I have noticed a difference with my shiny new IB Systems roof. Thanks Chandler's!!

We own a small, family run, established and reputible roofing company in the SE struggling for years in attempts to take the next step in our business through a tough economy but through fate, we found Chandler's Roofing online which is located across the US and decided to ask Mr. Trevor Leeds, the owner of Chander's a few questions not really knowing if he would respond, but to our surprise he did. He provided so much information and in detail. Trevor is a very genuine person who is knowledgeable not only in business but of course, in the roofing trade. We are so appreciative of Trevor for taking the time to communicate back and forth with us, providing some great tips and extremely helpful information to help a fellow small roofing company have the opportunity to be successful. We've been going at it alone for 10 years, and after this, we consider Trevor Leeds at Chander's Roofing our mentor. Thank you!

They put in our roof in 1999, Manhattan Beach flat roof. Looks pretty good still in 2013. Bought the 20 yr warranty. We've been calling for a few years about leaks but were pushed off. This year reached a new guy who was nice & sent a sales guy over. He suggested they could tear it up looking for the leak, or just put a coating over everything.
I brought in a local roofer recommended on Yelp. He pointed out all the wrinkles they left in, the seams face into water flow vs away, the chimney was wrong material sitting unprotected in a low pooling area (it rotted, but the Chandler guy didn't find the golf ball size hole), and the outflow holes were too small.
I gave up pushing the warranty and used someone who seemed to know his business better.

The process went very well from start to finish. We had the pleasure of working with Blake Welstead and he was very professional and courteous. Blake evaluated the existing roof system and explain how the roof looked at it's current state. We mutually agreed that we definitely needed a new roof. The contract process was easy and simple and I liked that they use the GAF system because we were able to go online and review information regarding GAF's roofing system.
The installation process was pretty straightforward. The tear off guys came around 7:00am on Monday and they were very clean and not messy at all. The tear off guys were from a different company (HoneyCutt Company) and we were asked to write a letter to give them permission to park their truck in the driveway, since our driveway is fairly new they were concerned that the weight of the truck will damage the driveway. I'm happy to say that we did not experience any damage to the driveway. The tear off guys were done in a day and the installation started the next day (Tuesday) and went pretty smooth. We had a few questions that Blake was able to answer and made sure they guys addressed. The roof was complete on Thursday evening. I would say the guys did a great job and the roof looks amazing. The HD Shingles look great and having the ridge vents instead of dormers makes the roof look polish and streamlined. I am so glad because the dormers are not that attractive.
A month later, we had the gutters installed by Chandler Roofing and the process was super simple and was great and they were done in a day.
We are really happy with the complete installation of the roof and gutters and would highly recommend Chandler's roofing. I would recommend asking for Blake, if he's available, because he is a great guy and great to work with. I also had the pleasure of working with Erica and she is awesome. Erica and I emailed back and forth on various things and she is super quick in her responses.

Probably not the company to go with if you need a skylight fixed.
Took over two weeks (and three phone calls to the company) to receive the estimate from Daniel. Many excuses were made about the lag time.
After two weeks, the estimate was not for the product we requested. Took another two weeks to get an estimate for the product we wanted.
I am sorry to leave the bad review as we really wanted to hire a local company, but steer clear.

I called to get an estimate today for a property my client is buying and I nearly TIPPED OVER when they told me what their charge was JUST TO GIVE US AN ESTIMATE. Are you ready? $500!!!!!!!! Can you BELIEVE that? $500 just to give us an estimate!! When I first asked for an estimate and she stated there was a fee, I figured it couldn't possibly be more than $100-150(and I thought that was being generous considering other bids you get for ANYTHING getting repaired in your home are typically free). When I told her I didn't need a roof certification that all I needed was an estimate it didn't seem to make a difference. Her answer was, escrow is going to ask for this paper and its given to you for the $500. Umm... HUH? I think I know the difference between needing an ESTIMATE and a ROOF CERT and I was clear to state an estimate was all I was calling for. 1st. I'm a local RE agent, my clients ask for roofing referrals ALL THE TIME. 2nd. My client will need to get their roof repaired as soon as we close escrow. Guess who won't be getting the business? I still can't believe she was able to tell me the charge was $500 just for coming out to bid. Complete and utter craziness. Even my lawyer doesn't charge $500 for a consultation. Did I mention the house I wanted the estimate for was only 3 min from their office? Geesh.

Chandler's Roofing scheduled the job and completed it in a very timely manner. The roofing crew kept the job site clean during the work and after job completion. The repaired tiled roof area looks very nice. Brain, his staff, and the roofing crew done a great job.
