In 1980, Les Watrous acquired a California General Contractors License 388630 under the name The Watrous Group. In the early 80s, as home inspectors were scarce, The Watrous Group became a go-to for home inspections. Les became well-versed in the home inspection industry. As the home inspection sector progressed in the early 90s, many insurance claims against inspectors stemmed from leaking roofs. Roof inspections became a recommendation from home inspectors, who began to disclaim roofs. Les recognized this as a chance and established Cert-A-Roof® in 1993 to inspect and certify roofs as leak-free. The term LeakFREE® Roof Certification was trademarked by him. With the real estate, banking, and insurance industries acknowledging the value of roof inspections and certifications, demand increased. The Watrous Group dba Cert-A-Roof. Les hails from Connecticut, with a lineage of home builders who constructed from the ground up. He was taught and firmly believes in doing things correctly.

In 1978, he relocated to California with his mother and father for his father's health, seeking a warmer climate.

His expertise in the entire home structure—foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, and quality craftsmanship—made him a preferred contractor.

In 1993, he launched Cert-A-Roof to give home and commercial buyers insight into the roofs they were considering.

In the aftermath of the 1994 earthquake, he took on the task of repairing damaged homes. He took on the role of consumer advocate, dealing with insurance companies to achieve favorable settlements. He wrote and published a book named Top Dollar Property Claims. It was acknowledged by the Los Angeles Times as one of the Top Ten Books of the Year in real estate.
