Update - While I remain irked about Abril's sloppy business office, I did receive a personal call from Rick Abril and the company cleared up my concerns. Their actual work is always good. My final advice: proceed with caution. There aren't a lot of foam roofers for residential applications, so Abril is still worth considering.

When my T&G roof needing replacing, I researched both membrane and foam roof replacements. Once I learned more about foam, its application, protection, additional insulation value and expected lifetime I decided on it. I quickly narrowed the list to two companies. I chose Abril for three main reasons: 1. The way I was treated by Rick and others during my investigation and question-asking process (which lasted over 6 months - I'm not fast with such things). I got timely response and good answers. 2. The examples of their work that I visited. Abril provided an extensive list of installations both in my town and in neighboring towns. I did drive-bys to find houses similar to mine. I then contacted over a half-dozen persons and visited their homes to look at the workmanship and discuss their experience. Both were positive. 3. Abril focuses on roof installation, but were very willing to work with my electrical contractor, my solar water system, and my solar PV installer. Abril never played the ""we cannot be responsible for all those other people doing work on the roof"" card. They had no conflicts either, since they just focused on the roof.

During the actual work, I was constantly up on the roof watching (because I like learning stuff I don't know). The crews were not only tolerant of me, but took time to answer my questions. I have a lot of 'stuff' going on on my roof, and it made me comfortable to know how they were addressing many of the issues they encountered. When everything was completed my yard was cleaned of all debris.

I am really picky about giving 5 stars - that level of rating for me means they can't have done better. In my case there were a few minor things, mostly related to flashing and siding that I would have liked 'neater'. But they do not affect what I believe to be the quality of the ultimate roof - it is just my 5-star pickiness.

If you are investigating a foam roof, I highly recommend that you include them as a candidate.

Now that we are in the midst of winter, I want to add to my previous review. I am so happy that we invested in a foam roof with the additional rigid foam insulation underlayment. Our utility bills have not increased dramatically as I was expecting, and we are perfectly comfortable in our home, sometimes even too hot with our radiant heating. We had to lower our thermostat to 68, and we were just fine with that. It's amazing what a difference a well insulated home makes, and roof insulation is the most vital aspect of retaining heat in the winter as well as deflecting heat in the summer months. Prior to replacing our tar and gravel roof, we had insulated walls and double pane windows and were still sweltering in the summer. Apparently the roof is the place to focus, and I couldn't be happier with our investment.

We are very happy with Abril roofing. We contacted all three foam roof contranctors for patching the part of the foam roof and re-coating. One company, which has more customers around my area, was very difficult to communicate/get an estimate and told us we needed a new foam roof. Out of two others, Abril came with a better quote. Rich and the crew were pleasant to work with.

Only thing it surprised me was they gave me only a couple days of notice when they will come. But I was giving them flexibility of picking the day so it wasn't much of the problem for me. Rick was also very approgiotic of giving me a short notice.

After the work was done, we had some questions regarding the work. Rick stopped by next day and answered our questions.

Along with plumming issues we had a leak this winter so it was time for a roof repair. They charged me a lot less than everyone else was going tyo charge. The roof looks good and the price was good to. What else could I ask for guess the real test will be next winter. But as of now I am very happy with the results.

Trade referrals can be rather touchy as a Realtor. On the one hand, one client can have an excellent experience w/ a trade professional while another might not. This is especially the case w/ quality roofers, you tend to have a love/hate experience. Fortunately, I can proudly endorse Abril Roofing.

Please keep in mind that Abril Roofing is specifically for flat or slightly pitched roofs so if you're looking for composition shingles, please seeking another roofer. Abril Roofing's specialty is EcoFoam insulation - Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF). What this amounts to is a sealed thermal envelope that offers years of increased energy efficiency and is also highly walkable for general cleaning of tree debris.

I met w/ Rick Abril, owner, over a month ago to help assist w/ a roof estimate for my clients, both the buyer and seller. We had already procured two additional estimates - one being a T&G (tar and gravel) reroof and the other w/ the existing materials already applied to the roof. Abril Roofing's estimate came in thousands of dollars below the other two estimates along w/ the added benefit of better overall insulation. In addition, the seller simply wanted to make general repairs to his roof prior to passing it over to the new buyer. The noted repair estimate was well w/in my client's budget (a little of a thousand dollars).

When the repair was done, the tranfer of ownership was complete. A week later, we got our first true rain storm. What was soon discovered was that the material first applied hadn't set properly. Upon the request from the new buyer, Rick, personally, came out for an inspection the day the call was made to his company. The next day, Abril's team returned and resealed the entire house w/ another form of material at no additional cost and there's been no problems ever since, even after the torrential rain we recently experienced.

Since then, I've met w/ several other owners who recently (w/in the past several years) had a re-roof done by Abril and all had agreed that Abril Roofing's quality service and reasonable pricing is ""the real McCoy"". So, when it comes to homes w/ flat or slightly pitched roofs, I highly endorse Abril Roofing.

Very satisfied with this roofing company. A large well known Bay Area roofing company that specializes in foam roofs told us we needed a new foam roof immediately and we got a second opinion from Abril who said that we only needed minor repairs and then our roof would still be fine for a couple more years. They did the repairs for a reasonable price and we have had no problems during the recent rains. We will definitely use Abril when our roof has to be replaced in a couple of years.

Stars deducted for communication. I wish they did a better job of telling you what to expect each day and when they would be there. I have a dog that needed to be put inside while they were on the roof and in the yard. It would be nice if one person introduced themselves as the lead person to communicate with . . . I had no idea who to talk to and who spoke English. I would have liked to be there for the inspection; first they told me probably Friday, then another guy said they'd call me to confirm and it'd probably be the next week, but then I never got another call and they did the inspection while I was away from the home without telling me. I didn't know they'd need to get inside the house so I didn't know I needed to be there when they started, but luckily I came home for another reason and found them there, needing to get inside to tape up the ceilings. First they told me they'd start on a Tuesday and not finish til the next week, but actually finished in 3 days, the same week. When you work away from the home and have animals to take into consideration, you really need them to communicate when they will be there and what to expect at each stage. The workers were polite, nice, and left the yard clean. Tape pulled paint off the walls inside, they offered to touch up but I didn't have the interior paint. I think the replaced gutters are a little sloppily matched up at the seams, but I can live with it. Also I had to tell them to clean up the inside of the skylight because a lot of debris had fallen in there. Again I couldn't tell who was the right guy to talk to, so felt a little brushed off, and had to mention it a couple of times, but they did take care of it completely.

They did a good job with our Eichler roof. One star deducted for a minor issue with some trim that they added to cover up a small saw mark they made while replacing some wood siding. But overall we are very pleased with the results.

Mixed review for Abril because their communication was poor. I think they respond best to jobs that are larger. We needed to re-foam portions of our roof to seal off an area where we have an a/c unit.

First contact was the owner's son he said he would come out to do an in person estimate on an agreed time/ date which was essential since we had to coordinate with our a/c guy. He did not show up. Then when we called asking what happened The owner said his son was handling our issue but he was not in the office and gave us the son's cell number, we called the son and he said some excuse about a truck not being available. This was just for the estimate, we gave them the benefit of the doubt, because honestly they are the cheapest company by far, from over the phone estimates.

After many phone calls they finally came out and completed the job. I have to say the roof is great, but talking to these people can be very frustrating.

Oh and they have a minimum charge of around $1200 because they have to get their foaming truck out and a crew. I wished they were better communicators because I know they specialize in Eichler roofing and they are a good deal.
