My great-grandfather Willie Darrow and his brother started as slaters before branching into wood shingles. The business was later taken over by my grandfather Mitchel Lay and then my father Jeffrey Lay, and now it’s passed down to me and my three siblings, all of whom have sons in the trade.

Being a fifth-generation roofer, I have been devoted to public service since my father suggested I stop attending school in the eighth grade. I was running crews before I could drive; I mastered speed sheets and roofing at a young age. Driven by a desire for excellence and customer satisfaction, I received my GED in 2000. Not long after, I attended Brunswick Community College for business economics and enrolled in the AAA Construction School for roofing and waterproofing. I aimed to surpass those who came before me, ultimately earning a master's degree in business and over 100 certifications. I’ve had the honor of contributing to some of the most recognizable buildings in the country. I’ve worked in Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, and South Carolina, but Georgia is my home, and roofing is my vocation.
